Exploring the Future of Music: AI Bricolage Session – Season 2

AI Bricolage Session – Season 2: Embracing the Future of Music

Digital Hollywood University, Japan's first private professional graduate school, is leading the charge in integrating science, engineering, art, and design (SEAD) education. This initiative focuses on producing leaders who will create new industries and cultural phenomena using digital communication. As part of this mission, the university is hosting the "AI Bricolage Session – Season 2" starting November 2025, with the third session titled "Resonance in the Future of Music" scheduled for March 24, 2026.

In a world where generative AI and other artificial intelligence technologies are rapidly developing, their influence permeates various fields, including music. However, the implications of these innovations for human creativity are complex and often met with mixed reactions. The pivotal question this session seeks to address is: Does AI hold value for human creation, and if so, what are the conditions and limits under which this value manifests? Through perspectives shared by filmmakers, illustrators, musicians, and researchers, we aim to unpack the relationship between AI and creativity.

Overview of the Third Session

Title: Resonance in the Future of Music – Between Creation and Intelligence
Date: March 24, 2026, 19:00 to 21:00
Location: Digital Hollywood University, Surugadai Hall
Entry Fee: 1,000 JPY
Capacity: 100 participants

The advances in generative AI are redefining the very methodologies of music production. The discussion will explore how algorithms can contribute to composition, whether human creativity is being augmented or restructured as a result. This session will analyze the multifaceted relationship between AI and creativity, encompassing insights from both music production practices and academic research in music information processing.

Our distinguished guest speakers for this session include:
1. Hiroyuki Ito, CEO of Crypton Future Media, who has driven the evolution of digital music culture and explores the impact of AI in music production through practical case studies.
2. Masaaki Goto, lead researcher at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), who will discuss the future musical experiences that music information processing can unlock.

This session is a must-attend for anyone involved in or curious about creativity, media theory, and the implications of AI expression in the arts.

Guest Profiles

Hiroyuki Ito
As the CEO of Crypton Future Media, Ito has expanded operations based on the development and sale of digital music sources, including the world-renowned vocal synthesis software, Hatsune Miku. He played a crucial role in establishing a globally participative creative culture and redesigning the music distribution ecosystem in the digital network era. Recently, he has ventured into new music experiences through Ongalabo Inc. Recognized as a pioneer at the intersection of technology and creative culture, he received the 藍綬褒章 for his contributions to new industry achievements and has authored the book, The Future of Creation: The Story Behind Hatsune Miku's Birth in Hokkaido, set for release in 2025.

Masaaki Goto
A senior chief researcher at the AIST and holding a PhD in engineering, Goto has spent 34 years pioneering techniques in music information processing to enrich future media content experiences. His ongoing research includes the music discovery service, Kiite, among others, and he holds numerous prestigious awards for his research contributions. He also serves as a visiting professor at Waseda University and a professor at a Tsukuba University joint graduate program.

Session Features

  • - Intersection of Practice and Theory: The session enables creators to share practical examples of AI tool integration, unexpected impacts, and limitations.
  • - Diverse Perspectives: Specialists from various fields will address both advantages and disadvantages, as well as ethical and practical challenges posed by AI.
  • - Bricolage Approach: This session will embody a bricolage philosophy, contrasting structured design with the assemblage of readily available resources and iterative creation.
  • - Revisiting Fundamental Questions: It will challenge the perception of AI solely as a supportive entity in creative activities, prompting a redefinition of creativity and the essence of human creation.

Future Sessions

The series will continue with:
  • - The 4th session in May 2026, focusing on the interaction between visual arts and AI, featuring guest speakers Luna Tsukikami and Tomoyasu Hirano.
  • - The 5th session in July 2026, titled Paradox of Future Creation, exploring the dual aspects of generative AI—benefits and challenges—with media aesthetics expert Mitsuhiro Takezawa.
