PowerSecure's Innovative Energy Solutions for PRECorp Enhance Rural Energy Resilience

In a significant move towards enhancing energy resilience in rural areas, PowerSecure, a subsidiary of Southern Company, is partnering with Powder River Energy Corporation (PRECorp) and the NRTC to launch a utility-scale battery energy storage and solar generation project in Moorcroft, Wyoming. This initiative is particularly aimed at tackling peak demand challenges faced by PRECorp due to industrial growth and expanding rural loads.

The projected benefits of this project are substantial. It is designed to not only reduce annual power costs for PRECorp's members—potentially saving up to $1 million annually—but also to reinforce system reliability through added backup capacity. This approach represents a major step forward in enabling PRECorp to deliver consistent service during outages and extreme weather conditions while managing along with load expectations.

Jim Smith, the president of PowerSecure, emphasizes that the project's core intention is to provide real value to the cooperative’s members. He stated, “By combining battery storage and solar generation, we're helping the cooperative manage peak demand, strengthen reliability, and control costs while helping to ensure the system is ready to support future growth.”

The integrated energy solution will feature a 5 MW battery energy storage system equipped with an energy capacity of 21.6 MWh alongside 1.25 MWdc of ground-mounted solar generation. This configuration is set to enhance operational flexibility, which allows for improved management of peak demand—key to effectively servicing an increasing energy consumption level expected in the region.

Brian Mills, the CEO of PRECorp, added to the dialogue around this initiative by highlighting the vital role of technology and experience embedded within the project. He remarked, “Our value to our members has always been, we have to be a trusted energy partner.
