Atelier Seiran to Showcase Traditional Awa Ai Art at Venice Biennale 2026

Atelier Seiran's Participation in Venice Biennale 2026

In May 2026, Atelier Seiran will proudly participate in the 61st International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, presenting its craftsmanship rooted in the traditional Japanese dyeing technique known as Awa Ai. The exhibition will occur at the historically significant Palazzo Dona dalle Rose, showcasing a captivating theme: "The Root of Life."

A Unique Artistic Journey

Based in Tokushima, a region renowned for its indigo production, Atelier Seiran has dedicated nearly five decades to cultivating a unique artistic practice centered around Awa Ai. Established in 1970 by Yoko Hashimoto, Atelier Seiran emerged during a time when synthetic dyes posed a significant threat to traditional crafts. Through the development of a distinctive wax-resist dyeing technique, the atelier has transformed Awa Ai into a contemporary artistic language that transcends traditional craftsmanship.

The Exhibition's Theme: The Root of Life

The exhibition at Palazzo Dona dalle Rose will explore the cultural and historical "fissures" that contribute to contemporary art narratives. Under the theme "The Root of Life," Atelier Seiran's presentation aims to evoke a primordial realm that unites nature, time, and life within the profound blues of Awa Ai. This innovative approach invites viewers to reflect on their own connections with these fundamental aspects of existence.

Collaborative Highlights

One of the notable features of this exhibition is the collaboration with Cameroonian artist Serge Mouangue. This partnership seeks to highlight shared expressions of life and vitality across different cultures, creating a dialogue between Cameroonian symbolic traditions and the philosophy rooted in the cycles of nature, embodied by Awa Ai.

Artists Yoko Hashimoto, Hatsuko Ukigawa, and Kiyoko Hashimoto will exhibit their works, which have previously graced international events such as Le Salon in Paris. These pieces bridge the gap between tradition and innovation, giving a technological spin to classic art forms.
