NEDHSA and LATAN Join Forces to Launch Assistive Technology Centers
In a significant step towards improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities, the Northeast Delta Human Services Authority (NEDHSA) has forged a strategic partnership with the Louisiana Assistive Technology Access Network (LATAN). The goal: to foster greater awareness of and access to assistive technology throughout Northeast Louisiana.
The Signing of a Historic Agreement
On February 13, 2026, NEDHSA Executive Director Dr. Monteic A. Sizer and LATAN President and CEO Yakima Black formalized their collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The agreement aims to establish Assistive Technology (AT) Demonstration Centers that will improve access to essential devices and resources. These centers are designed to help individuals achieve greater independence, enhance daily living, and improve overall quality of life.
"This collaboration allows us to streamline referrals and share resources to reduce barriers to assistive technology access," commented Dr. Sizer. He emphasized the importance of bringing technological solutions directly to rural communities that often go underserved.
Bridging the Technology Gap
Under the new partnership, both organizations will work diligently to connect citizens with the necessary assistive technologies. NEDHSA will allocate office space and storage for AT devices at its Developmental Disabilities Services Office, while LATAN will help facilitate assessments and planning through rural clinics.
Yakima Black highlighted LATAN's three-decade legacy of supporting Louisiana residents with disabilities, pointing out that Region 8 has historically been underserved. This partnership aims to expand LATAN's reach across 12 parishes, increasing access to vital assistive technology and enhancing public education on its benefits.
Key Initiatives of the Partnership
The partnership includes several notable initiatives:
- - Demonstration Centers: These centers will provide both education and access to assistive technology, establishing a physical presence in the community.
- - Hands-on Access: Monthly demonstrations will allow individuals to try out devices and receive professional assessments tailored to their needs.
- - Broad Support: The partnership aims to support a diverse population, including individuals with developmental disabilities, behavioral health conditions, addiction challenges, veterans, seniors, and school children.
Dr. Sizer expressed optimism about the impact of this collaboration, asserting that it will not only benefit the immediate region but also resonate throughout the state. “Now, we will specifically make technological innovations available to the most vulnerable in our region and state,” he said.
