Airbnb Encourages Australians to Embrace Weekending in 2026

Embracing Weekends: Airbnb's Initiative for Aussie Travelers

Amid the hustle and bustle of work and life, many Australians find themselves struggling to take regular holidays. A recent study by Airbnb revealed alarming statistics: nearly 76% of workers in Australia aren't regularly taking time off, with roughly 90% expressing that it's challenging to step away from their jobs. This reality raises concerns about burnout and emphasizes the need for rejuvenating breaks.

To tackle this issue, Airbnb has declared 2026 the year of 'Weekending', highlighting the benefits of short weekend getaways as a viable alternative to lengthy vacations. This initiative encourages Australians to seize weekends for brief escapes, reconnecting with themselves and loved ones.

The Weekend Getaway Trend

Surprisingly, around 80% of Australians feel that short trips are often more enjoyable and less stressful than long extended vacations. Eight out of ten respondents reported that these brief excursions help them recharge from daily life more effectively. Furthermore, about 70% of travelers expressed a desire for more spontaneous adventures, making weekend trips an ideal way to satisfy this craving.

Sabina Read, a psychologist and expert on mental well-being, elaborates on the psychological impacts of such breaks. According to her, when individuals continuously juggle work and personal obligations without taking time off, they experience “time compression.” This phenomenon can lead to diminished mental and emotional health.

Read explains, “Engaging in new experiences over a span of two to four days can reactivate our brain's capacity for memory formation, consequently enhancing life satisfaction.” Shifting our daily routines, even for a short time, can lead to lower cortisol levels, which helps manage stress and prevents potential burnout. Regular short getaways are pivotal for maintaining long-term health and happiness.

Short Trips for Busy Families

For many parents, taking vacations can be an even bigger challenge due to financial and logistical constraints. Almost 85% feel they're unable to take vacations due to various reasons, with more than half citing costs as a significant hurdle. Here, 'Weekending' presents a viable solution, as 80% of respondents believe shorter trips allow for quality time and strengthened connections with companions.

As Read emphasizes, “Traveling with loved ones, even for a brief period, creates lasting memories. Spending face-to-face time together amidst new experiences fortifies familial bonds.” Watching children enjoy life away from daily stressors can also cultivate resilience and confidence. Parents should involve children in trip planning and share their excitement, as such bonds and experiences will become cherished memories.

Reflecting on the desire for more freedom in travel among 70% of Australians, 'Weekending' encourages people to utilize their regular weekends instead of waiting for the perfect time for a long trip. Furthermore, adding a few days of vacation around weekends can help in picking up any unused paid leave.

Simplifying the Escape

To truly escape daily stress, one doesn't need to venture far. One study revealed that 47% of Australian workers feel a simple 2-3 hour drive is sufficient for a mental reset. Local getaways can offer the same rejuvenating benefits as international travel. Rural towns and coastal areas are welcoming weekend visitors, particularly outside of peak seasons, providing local economies with a much-needed boost. More people are also adding a couple of vacation days around weekends, which results in additional income for local businesses.

Susan Wheeldon, Airbnb's Country Manager for Australia, states, “Australians don’t want to feel overwhelmed by travel. 'Weekending' should encourage a mindset of spontaneous trips, where just a night or two away can foster crucial reconnection and relaxation.”

Furthermore, for those considering hosting on Airbnb, it’s a fantastic way to alleviate travel expenses. With the help of co-hosts, the hassle of managing listings while enjoying weekend escapes can be minimized.

“Weekend travelers invigorate local communities, bringing life to cafes and markets throughout the year,” Wheeldon adds. “For visitors, it's a chance to experience the unique charm of each region firsthand.”

To help facilitate these getaways, Airbnb has compiled guides showcasing ideal nearby destinations and popular attractions for weekend trips across various states.
