Experience Sustainable Luxury at Shinjuku Washington Hotel
The Shinjuku Washington Hotel in Shinjuku, Tokyo, is set to launch an innovative stay experience through its "CO₂ Zero Stay Plan" on June 10, 2025. This first-of-its-kind initiative in the hotel sector utilizes agricultural J-Credits, which aim to offset CO₂ emissions generated during guests' stays, effectively making them carbon neutral. Guests will not only enjoy sustainable accommodation but will also receive two servings of local "Hotaru no Sato Kubiki Rice" (Koshihikari rice from Niigata Prefecture) and an "Offset Stay Certificate" as part of this unique offer.
A Commitment to Sustainability
The CO₂ Zero Stay Plan is designed to combat greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane, which has a warming potential 25 times greater than CO₂. The plan's framework involves promoting extended drying periods for rice cultivation, which significantly reduces methane emissions.
High-quality Kubiki Rice, produced by Hotaru no Sato Co., Ltd. based in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, is sourced as a key part of this plan. This limited-time offer is available for the first 300 guests, aiming to create a sustainable loop supporting local agriculture.
With climate change being a pressing global issue, Japan has set ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 46% by 2030 compared to 2013 levels and achieve complete carbon neutrality by 2050. The travel and tourism sector alone accounts for approximately 10% of global CO₂ emissions, making mindful travel choices essential.
Benefits to Guests and Agriculture
By participating in the CO₂ Zero Stay Plan, guests not only contribute to climate action but also support the agricultural sector, which faces challenges such as an aging workforce and population decline. The initiative allows for J-Credits generated from agricultural activities to be a new revenue source for farmers, aligning environmental sustainability with economic growth. Guests will also obtain the Offset Stay Certificate, confirming their contribution to emissions reduction.
What Guests Will Receive:
1. A chance to mitigate their environmental impact (CO₂ reduction and contribution to SDGs).
2. Support local agricultural sustainability.
3. An official Offset Stay Certificate.
4. Two servings of Kubiki Rice (Koshihikari).
