Accelerating Autonomous Driving with Tier IV and NEDO
In a promising development for the autonomous vehicle industry, Tier IV, a deep tech company based in Shinagawa, Tokyo, has been selected for NEDO's project focusing on enhancing the use of AI and driving data in autonomous driving. NEDO, the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, is a governmental research and development institute championing Japan's advancement in new technologies, and their project 'GENIAC' aims to build a robust AI data foundation to strengthen industrial competitiveness.
Vision for Democratizing Autonomous Driving
Tier IV's mission is clear: to democratize autonomous driving. The foundation of this vision lies in expanding access to high-quality driving data through advanced technologies. One of the main challenges in developing end-to-end (E2E) AI for autonomous vehicles is the necessity for vast amounts of diverse driving data. However, collecting this data from real-world driving experiences alone can be prohibitively time-consuming and costly.
To address these challenges, the new project will engage in several key initiatives:
1.
Large-Scale Driving Data Collection: This involves accumulating driving data across various vehicle types and environments, alongside the development of automatic labeling technologies to streamline data structuring.
2.
Virtual Data Generation using AI: Tier IV plans to build a multimodal generative AI that accommodates various sensors, allowing for the creation of high-quality training data. This data will include representations of rare scenarios, such as those occurring immediately before accidents, as well as variations in weather and time.
3.
Building an AI Data Ecosystem: The project strives to establish an infrastructure that allows domestic autonomous driving developers to access high-quality data necessary for innovation.
Through these initiatives, Tier IV aims to solidify its expertise and technical capabilities in dataset construction within the autonomous driving sector. The establishment of this AI data infrastructure will not only ease the burdens faced by companies in developing autonomous vehicle technologies but also bolster the international competitiveness of Japan's autonomous driving industry.
Contributing to a Safe and Efficient Autonomous Driving Society
Tier IV's commitment to building a more efficient and safer autonomous driving society is an integral part of this endeavor. By enhancing access to quality datasets, they hope to accelerate the realization of a trusted and high-efficiency self-driving society, ultimately benefitting everyone from individual drivers to the broader community.
