SSFF & ASIA's Inclusive Short Film Festival for Everyone's Experience

SSFF & ASIA's Barrier-Free Film Project

The Short Short Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & ASIA), one of Asia's largest international short film festivals and recognized by the American Academy Awards, is taking significant strides towards creating an inclusive cinematic experience. This year's festival continues its commitment to accessibility by screening films with audio guides for the visually impaired and subtitle guides for the Deaf and hard of hearing communities.

With a focus on integration, SSFF & ASIA aims to increase opportunities for all individuals to enjoy films. Over the past two years, the festival has hosted universal screening events equipped with audio descriptions and subtitles, receiving numerous requests from the community for more accessible films.

This year, the festival features the short film 'The Woman Who Acts,' starring Hikari Mitsushima and directed by Toshiyuki Teruya (known for his work on 'Gareki Sale'), along with the newly produced short film 'The Town Without Sunrise,' created in partnership with Tokyo. These films will be shown for the first time with guides, and attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a talk event featuring Deaf actors and those involved in subtitle creation, ensuring that the event is fully accessible through sign language interpretation and summary writing.

In support of expanding this inclusive approach ahead of the fall international short film festival, a crowdfunding campaign has been launched. The funds raised will be used not only for securing films and producing guides but also for organizing accessibility services like sign interpretation and venue preparations for the premiere screening. Contributors will have their names featured in film credits with guide inclusion, an invitation to the screening and award ceremony, and even special festival merchandise like T-shirts.

Tetsuya Bessho, the festival representative, expresses a clear vision: “Short films encapsulate the diverse cultures, landscapes, and sentiments of people worldwide. Each film offers a unique 'cinema travel' experience, allowing audiences to explore the world through stories. It is imperative that we create an environment where everyone can equally enjoy the emotions that film brings. This means ensuring that stories reach all viewers, including those with visual impairments and Deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals.”

Through this initiative, the festival aims to redefine barrier-free screenings as a norm rather than a rarity, aspiring for a society where everyone can engage with films effortlessly. We urge support and awareness for this crucial movement towards inclusivity.
