Prairie State College and Wind Creek Continue to Enrich Local Art Community Through Partnership

Enhancing the Local Art Scene: Prairie State College and Wind Creek Chicago Southland

In an inspiring collaboration that began nearly a year ago, Prairie State College (PSC) and Wind Creek Chicago Southland have broadened their commitment to local artistry via the Prairie State College Art Showcase at Wind Creek. Launched on July 22, 2025, this initiative serves to exhibit and sell the work of talented artists from across the Chicago Southland region, while simultaneously making regional art more accessible to the community.

The showcase began its exhibition journey with Chidera Onyeizeh, a Prairie State College alumnus from Richton Park, whose work set the tone for the events that followed. The partnership aims to create professional opportunities for artists and provides a platform where community members can engage with and appreciate local art. Since its inception, the showcase has featured a diverse lineup of artists, with exhibitions rotating throughout the year, bringing fresh perspectives and creativity into the space.

Here’s a brief look at the featured artists so far:
  • - Chidera Onyeizeh, July 22 – September 30, 2025
  • - Art Jackson, October 1 – November 30, 2025
  • - Patrick Thompson, December 2025 – February 2, 2026
  • - Mary Ann Trzyna, February 2026 – April 6, 2026
  • - James Bowden, April 7 – June 1, 2026

The visionary behind the initiative, Cathye Amos, who serves as the senior director of community relations and economic development at Wind Creek Chicago Southland, highlighted the importance of unity in nurturing the arts. She remarked, "This partnership is a direct reflection of what can happen when organizations come together with a shared commitment to community, creativity, and opportunity."

Echoing her sentiments, Dr. Jeri Bingham, vice president of external affairs and director of public safety for Prairie State College, expressed pride in these collaborative efforts that spotlight the exceptional talent within the Southland. The initiative serves not just as a venue for artworks, but as a celebration of local culture and creativity, connecting residents with artists.

As the exhibitions progress, curators like Javier Chavira, who oversees the Christopher Art Gallery at PSC, play a crucial role in selecting the showcased works. This gallery, located on the PSC campus in Chicago Heights, offers multiple exhibitions each year featuring artists from across the nation and beyond. The support from Wind Creek and PSC fosters an inclusive environment where art can thrive, and community members can partake in the creative process.

Every featured artist not only showcases their work but also has the opportunity to sell it, further supporting the local economy and promoting artistic endeavors. Artists are encouraged to share their perspectives through various mediums, enriching the collective cultural tapestry of the region.

The Prairie State College Art Showcase at Wind Creek is not just an exhibition; it’s an ongoing dialogue that nurtures the creative community while making art accessible to everyone. As more artists join this initiative, the partnership continues to evolve, impacting positively on the local art landscape.
