Western National Parks Teams Up with Amistad National Recreation Area to Enhance Visitor Experience

Western National Parks Partners with Amistad National Recreation Area

In an exciting new development for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers, Western National Parks (WNP) has officially announced its partnership with the Amistad National Recreation Area. This collaboration marks a significant step towards enriching visitor experiences and enhancing resource protection within one of the country's most beautiful landscapes.

Marie Buck, the president and CEO of WNP, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “We are proud to support the protection and interpretation of these storied and beautiful landscapes. Our partnership with Amistad National Recreation Area continues our important work, which aims to bring connection and wonder to the parks, creating lifelong stewards.”

Situated at the confluence of the Rio Grande, Devils River, and Pecos River, Amistad National Recreation Area boasts stunning vistas and a wealth of recreational opportunities. It is located just three hours from San Antonio, Texas and derives its name from the Spanish word for friendship, symbolizing its unique management agreement between the United States and Mexico. The lake offers an extensive array of water-based activities such as boating, swimming, and a renowned largemouth bass fishing experience. The park’s three ecological zones encompass dramatic canyons and diverse desert landscapes, nurturing vital ecosystems that include habitats for migrating monarch butterflies and other key species.

Additionally, Amistad serves as one of the largest public hunting areas in southwest Texas, making it a paradise for outdoor lovers. However, the park’s appeal isn't just in its natural beauty; it also houses a rich cultural and historical tapestry. The history of human occupation in the Amistad region dates back thousands of years to the last ice age, featuring one of the world's most extensive collections of Archaic-period pictographs. Historical events such as Spanish exploration, interactions with Mexico, and the evolution of military and railroad operations have all played a significant role in shaping the area.

Christine Donald, the parks chief of interpretation and resource management, stated, “I am so excited to partner with Western National Parks at the park and look forward to working with their professional and dedicated team who provide quality items to our visitors.”

Through this partnership, WNP aims to amplify the visitor experience at Amistad National Recreation Area by providing financial support, funding for research initiatives related to the park, and facilitating community programs and outreach efforts. One notable development includes the operation of the Amistad park store located in the visitor center, where all net proceeds will support national parks in the West. Park visitors can also explore the online store at store.wnpa.org.

Since its inception in 1938, WNP has contributed over $162 million in aid to various parks, further strengthening its commitment to conservation and visitor engagement across the nation. As WNP and Amistad National Recreation Area embark on this journey together, they invite everyone to experience the splendor of this unique destination, ensuring its preservation for generations to come.
