DJI Introduces Local Data Mode for ROMO to Enhance Privacy Protection Standards

DJI Introduces Local Data Mode for ROMO

DJI, a leading name in civilian drones and creative camera technology, has made a significant advancement in privacy protection with the launch of its Local Data Mode for the ROMO 2, its latest AI-powered vacuum robot. This new feature demonstrates DJI's commitment to user privacy by ensuring that all user data is stored and processed directly on their devices without any internet connection.

How It Works

When a user first powers on the ROMO, it connects to the internet to create a map of its surroundings. Upon activation of Local Data Mode, all mapping data is saved locally rather than in the cloud. This transition not only provides users with greater control over their personal information but also significantly reduces the risks associated with data exposure or unauthorized third-party access. Users can be confident that the data used for navigation and obstacle avoidance is securely stored within the device itself.

The innovative ROMO series employs advanced sensor technology, similar to that found in DJI’s high-end camera drones, allowing it to efficiently clean homes with precision obstacle detection, thanks to integrated high-resolution LiDAR. Importantly, the core functionalities of ROMO, including navigation and obstacle-avoidance capabilities, remain fully operational even without an internet connection, ensuring uninterrupted service.

Multi-Layered Privacy Protection

The Local Data Mode is a pivotal element in enhancing DJI’s multi-layered privacy protection system for ROMO. This robust framework safeguards users' data from the moment it is collected, through processing and storage, to eventual deletion. Key components of this privacy system include:

  • - Secure Access: Users can set up a security code for quick and secure access or utilize a one-time code sent to their mobile number for additional verification each time they log in.
  • - Explicit Consent: Before any data for the cleaning functions of ROMO 2—such as camera, voice features, and obstacle detection—can be captured or stored, users must provide explicit consent.
  • - End-to-End Encryption: For connected operations, end-to-end encryption protects data during transmission, thus preventing unauthorized third-party access.
  • - No Uploads While Offline: When offline, the ROMO 2 stores all data on the device itself and does not transmit to the cloud, further minimizing any potential risk of accidental data disclosure.
  • - Automated Data Deletion: Users can opt for an automated deletion setting, ensuring that all photos older than 14 days are deleted daily. Resetting the device to factory settings will permanently erase all data.

Industry Certifications

The ROMO series boasts several internationally recognized certifications for cybersecurity and data protection. It adheres to the ETSI EN 303 645 standard and complies with the EU Radio Equipment Directive (RED) requirements. Moreover, it has received the “Diamond” certification for IoT security by UL Solutions. A comprehensive penetration test conducted by TÜV SÜD in 2026 confirmed the absence of critical, high, or medium-risk security vulnerabilities. DJI's commitment to safety has led to regular independent third-party evaluations, ensuring top-tier security standards.

Seamless Smart Home Integration

In addition to these privacy enhancements, the ROMO now supports Matter, a universal connectivity standard for smart homes. This allows users to integrate the ROMO devices with compatible Matter-supporting controllers across various ecosystems such as Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings, and Home Assistant. Although compatibility and available features may vary, this integration offers a seamless user experience while maintaining privacy and security.

Availability

The Local Data Mode for the ROMO 2 is available starting today. Users simply need to update their ROMO 2 to the latest firmware that supports this feature. To activate Local Data Mode, users can enable it within the DJI Home app under “Security Settings” in the “Device Settings” section. Following its introduction to ROMO 2, this privacy feature is expected to be rolled out to future ROMO models, extending robust data protection to the next generation of DJI household robots.
