Huawei Digital Power's Role in ASEAN's Carbon-Free Transition Highlighted at AEBF-25

The ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF-25) took place from October 15 to 17 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, under the theme "Powering ASEAN: Bridging Boundaries, Building Prosperity." The event attracted over 1,500 representatives, including energy ministers, policymakers, industry associations, and business leaders from the ten ASEAN countries. Key discussions revolved around regional energy connectivity, clean energy transitions, investments, and technology implementations.

Huawei Digital Power Asia-Pacific played a vital role, presenting high-quality Smart-PV+ESS solutions and engaging in extensive dialogues with customers and industry partners from the ASEAN region. This participation underscored Huawei's commitment to accelerating the carbon-free transformation across the ASEAN region. Xia Hesheng, the Vice President of Huawei Digital Power and Chief of Strategy and Marketing, delivered a keynote speech emphasizing that robust grid connectivity and the cross-border transfer of renewable energy are crucial for achieving carbon neutrality.

In his address titled "Enabling the ASEAN Power Grid: The Critical Role of Grid-Forming Technologies for Cross-Border Power Trading," Xia highlighted the importance of stable electricity transmission and consumption in power grids that extensively utilize renewable energy sources. He noted that in the last decade, Huawei Digital Power has led the PV+ESS industry from grid-following to grid-forming capabilities, establishing high reliability and security standards in the sector. A notable example is the world’s first gigawatt-level microgrid project at “The Red Sea” destination in Saudi Arabia, powered entirely by green energy. Moreover, Huawei’s technology was integral in Cambodia's first 1-GWh grid-forming energy storage project, achieving certification from TÜV SÜD.

Chen Xieming, a digital power supply expert at Huawei Global Power Grid, contributed to a discussion on enhancing ASEAN grid resilience and the need for uniform regional grid standards to secure network safety and facilitate connectivity within ASEAN countries. He stressed that such standards are essential, especially in energy systems with high shares of renewable sources, to ensure regional grid stability.

Chong Chern Peng, Vice President of Digital Power Malaysia, emphasized Malaysia's strategic position within the ASEAN power grid. He pointed out that Malaysia has undertaken significant energy collaborations with neighboring countries such as Thailand and Singapore through cross-border electricity transactions. To realize the vision of an ASEAN power grid, each country's electricity networks must be resilient and dynamic. Therefore, grid-forming technologies are indispensable to this aim.

During the Minister and CEOs Dialogue, Xia Hesheng noted that promoting prosperity in ASEAN's energy sector hinges on building a stable and high-quality energy infrastructure, paired with appropriate policy guidelines and standards. Huawei Digital Power is committed to grid-forming solutions across various scenarios, enhancing the grid’s short-circuit strength, inertia, and black start capabilities. For instance, at the The Red Sea site, thousands of PCS devices are interconnected in island mode, enabling a black start within minutes.

Huawei has developed an ESS safety protection system that encompasses everything from cells to networks. Employing intelligent string architecture and rigorous quality control measures establish a solid foundation for product safety. Such initiatives ensure long-term operational reliability, as demonstrated by the Golmud project in Qinghai, which has maintained a failure rate of less than 0.5% over 13 years of stable operation. Huawei Digital Power aims to help ASEAN establish the PV+ESS industry as a global benchmark for the energy transition through high-quality end-to-end products and technologies.

The pathway to a green future for ASEAN relies on a stable and efficient energy supply. At AEBF-25, Huawei Digital Power not only showcased its industry-leading grid-forming technologies and system-level capabilities but also reaffirmed its commitment to building a green, intelligent, and sustainable future. Looking ahead, Huawei Digital Power plans to double its research and development investments and deepen collaborations with local partners to advance the transformation of ASEAN's energy mix collectively. Their belief remains firm: technology is pivotal in realizing a carbon-free world, positioning Huawei Digital Power as a reliable partner on this journey.
