Unveiling Insights on Medical Mall Management
Recently, Magellan Medical, headquartered in Shinagawa, Tokyo, published findings from a national survey conducted in collaboration with Professor Hisashi Ohmichi of Kyoto Prefectural University. This initiative aims to clarify the management realities of clinics within medical malls across Japan.
Survey Overview
The research, titled "Survey on Management and Collaboration Practices of Clinics in Healthcare Malls", involved responses from 45 clinics spread across Japan. This first phase of exploration sought to gather preliminary data on the economic conditions and operational challenges faced by these clinics.
The survey revealed that 60% of the participating clinics reported a profitable year, while 20% broke even, and another 20% faced financial deficits. In comparison to the previous year, 37.8% saw improvements in their management, while 31.1% reported deterioration, leaving another 31.1% unchanged.
Patient Acquisition Statistics
An analysis of new and returning patient figures painted a contrasting picture. While 66.7% of the clinics successfully attracted over 300 returning patients monthly, only 22.1% achieved the same for new patients. New patient acquisition routes primarily stemmed from online searches, followed closely by referrals from patients and other medical institutions, illustrating the significance of digital presence over physical location in patient acquisition.
Expectations vs. Reality
Among the benefits clinicians anticipated from joining healthcare malls, those finding higher than expected benefits were increases in patient volume and brand awareness, alongside advantages like securing parking spaces and using shared facilities. However, disappointing outcomes were reported regarding expected synergies with other departments, patient convenience improvements, and the malls' overall market strength.
Limited Collaborative Systems
A notable observation was that 91.1% of clinics lacked a cohesive system or infrastructure to facilitate interclinic collaboration, underscoring a considerable gap in operational integration within these medical settings. This finding emphasizes the need for strategic planning and systems to enhance collaboration among healthcare providers in these malls.
