As the season of newly harvested rice approaches, JA Zen-Noh has launched an autumn initiative called the "Rice Project for Seasonal Consideration," which includes a survey focusing on consumption preferences and nutritional needs during sports and exercise. Conducted among 4,413 individuals aged 20 to over 60, the survey revealed that a remarkable 66.9% expressed a desire to consume more rice during this harvest season.
When it comes to enjoying new rice, the top choices listed were "plain white rice with side dishes", "plain white rice", and "rice balls (onigiri)". Notably, when participants were asked about their preferred side dishes to accompany rice, "grilled salmon" took the top spot, while "mentaiko (spicy cod roe)" and "nori (seaweed)" were tied for second place. These preferences suggest a strong inclination towards savoring the simple and delicious taste of new rice without overly complex preparations.
On the other hand, the survey highlighted significant concerns among parents preparing meals, lunches, and snacks for their athletic children. Out of 550 parents surveyed, an astonishing 88.9% reported struggling with meal preparation. The survey gauged the most common items parents tend to provide before and after practice or games, and rice balls emerged as the most frequently prepared item.
In another subset of the survey involving 551 active children, rice balls again topped the list as the most desired food option prior to engaging in sports or physical activity. Parents were found to be especially conscious about ensuring that their children consume adequate amounts of protein, identifying it as a vital nutrient during activities. Furthermore, when asked what types of information related to meals or snacks would be beneficial, the majority indicated a preference for recipes featuring rice balls, highlighting their versatility and nutritional advantages.
These trends from the surveys point to a cultural appreciation for rice, particularly new rice, and a notable reliance on rice balls as a nutritious option for young athletes. Despite the challenges associated with meal preparation, the enthusiasm for rice-based dishes and the commitment to supporting children's dietary needs during sports is evident.
