Duke Energy's Significant Investment in North Carolina Community Colleges to Create Skilled Workforce
Duke Energy's Commitment to Workforce Development
In a significant move to bolster the skilled workforce in North Carolina, Duke Energy Foundation has announced a total investment of $600,000 aimed at community colleges across the state. This initiative is designed to create a robust pipeline of skilled workers prepared to meet the increasing demands of the energy industry. Out of this amount, $500,000 is allocated to support 19 community college programs, while an additional $100,000 is directed towards the Forward Fund, which aims to enhance training accessibility for students in the region.
As the demand for modern energy infrastructure grows in North Carolina, Duke Energy recognizes the need for skilled professionals who can navigate and contribute to this evolving landscape. Kendal Bowman, Duke Energy's North Carolina president, emphasized the crucial role community colleges play in fulfilling the workforce needs of the energy sector. “As our state and industry continue to grow, North Carolina's community colleges are helping us meet the moment,” Bowman stated, highlighting the importance of local talent in the energy evolution.
Focus on Community Colleges
Among the institutions benefiting from this grant, Durham Technical Community College received $25,000 to enhance its Electric Line Technician Training program. This program is vital in providing a pathway for aspiring technicians into high-demand roles. J.B. Buxton, President of Durham Technical Community College, expressed gratitude for the support, stating, “Duke Energy's continued commitment to Durham Tech ensures we are connecting skilled individuals to good jobs like electric line technicians.” The college aims to equip students with the skills necessary to support their communities effectively.
The Forward Fund Initiative
In a first for the Duke Energy Foundation, the investment includes support for the Forward Fund (TFF), which provides zero-interest loans to assist students with essential life expenses, enabling them to fully concentrate on their studies while pursuing vocational training. This initiative is particularly beneficial for those enrolled in short-term programs linked with regional employers seeking high-wage positions. Meaghan Dennis, founder and CEO of the Forward Fund, expressed excitement about the grant, stating it would help to expand access to student-centered financing and break down barriers that might hinder students from enrolling or graduating.
