Explore Tokyo's Biodiversity with the Biome App
The "Tokyo Species Investigation Team 2025" is set to kick off this summer, inviting city residents to participate in a significant citizen-led biodiversity survey across Tokyo. From July 10 to September 16, 2025, anyone with a smartphone can join the fun and contribute to this engaging project, aimed at documenting and preserving the biodiversity of the metropolis.
What is the Tokyo Species Investigation Team?
Launched under a cooperative agreement between the Biome Company and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, this initiative aims to produce a digital wildlife catalog named the "Tokyo Species Ledger." This program seeks to unite citizens in documenting local wildlife, helping to protect Tokyo's rich biodiversity. This summer, as various species become more active, participants will be able to use the Biome app to capture and share images of the flora and fauna found throughout the city.
Fun Learning through Gaming
The investigation is structured like a game, with 14 challenges designed for participants of all skill levels. These quests will require individuals to discover and submit photos of specific species in designated areas, turning the survey into an adventurous exploration. For each completed task, participants will work towards unlocking rewards, enhancing not only the joy of wildlife observation but also learning about local ecology.
Educational Guides
Each quest comes equipped with a "guide" section that offers helpful hints for locating targeted species. Users will gain access to fun and informative content, enabling them to learn about the ecological diversity of Tokyo while enjoying the thrill of searching for various creatures. This interactive learning experience makes it perfect for all ages.
Experience Real-Life Exhibits
On July 12, coinciding with the survey kickoff, an exhibit showcasing past achievements of the "Tokyo Species Investigation Team" will be held at the Tokyo Skytree Town. This will feature panels summarizing what has been accomplished thus far and specialist-led classes to deepen understanding of local ecosystems (please note this is a paid event).
