Celebrating Eight Years of Clean Water Initiatives in Kenya

On September 5, 2025, the United Nations' International Day of Charity brought attention to the impactful partnership between Waterdrop Filter and The Water Project. This collaboration has transformed the lives of countless individuals by providing safe drinking water in western Kenya for eight remarkable years. The partnership has evolved since its inception in 2016, moving from isolated project sponsorships to a comprehensive program emphasizing the importance of clean water as a fundamental human right.

The Beginning of a Transformative Journey

The partnership was born out of a dire need for clean water in sub-Saharan Africa. Recognizing this critical issue, Waterdrop Filter initiated the Water4Smile drive in 2017. This initiative stipulates that every filter sold equates to one day of clean water availability for a child in need, reflecting a proactive commitment to address water scarcity. By choosing The Water Project as a trusted ally, Waterdrop Filter has fostered a lasting collaboration that signifies a strong commitment to global solidarity and sustainable solutions.

The early initiatives focused on tangible projects, including the construction of a rainwater catchment tank at Ematsuli Primary School. This particular effort has consistently benefited over 825 students, ensuring reliable access to potable water. Over time, Waterdrop Filter shifted its strategy to support programming that promotes broader and sustained investment in public infrastructure and community services, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Impact on Local Communities

One of the standout achievements of this partnership is the number of lives improved through access to clean water. Since its inception, The Water Project has enabled over 900,000 individuals to gain access to safe drinking water through the establishment of more than 2,600 facilities, boasting an impressive functionality rate of 96%.

Take, for instance, the story of Angel, a 13-year-old student at Kakoyi Primary School, who expressed gratitude for the newfound water source. She explained, “The new water source will help our parents save their resources because we will not be suffering from waterborne diseases anymore. Teachers will also have more time with students because we no longer have to leave school to fetch water or miss class when seeking treatment.”

Gabriel Sifuna, a teacher at the same school, articulated the broader implications of these projects, sharing, “This water point will help restore hope among learners and teachers. It addresses the challenges posed by water-related illnesses and saves valuable time that students previously spent searching for water.”

At Cheptuli Primary School, 14-year-old Margaret shared her journey, saying, “Previously, I had to carry water from home or walk long distances. It often made me feel embarrassed in class. Now that we have a new water point, my hygiene will improve, and I will have enough time to focus on my studies.” Teacher Esther Shabaya echoed these sentiments, noting that the reliable water source has decreased absenteeism and promoted better academic performance among students.

Reflecting on Eight Years of Change

Philip, the president of Waterdrop Filter, spoke about the significance of this collaboration on the International Day of Charity. “We are reminded that clean water is not only a basic human need, but also a foundation for dignity, education, and equality,” he stated. This eight-year relationship serves as a testament to how sustained charitable actions can drive transformative change within communities.
