Coinbase Launches Tokenization Hub in Abu Dhabi with FSRA Approval for Financial Services

Coinbase Sets Up Tokenization Hub in Abu Dhabi

In a significant advancement, Coinbase has successfully secured a Financial Services License (FSP) from the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA) of Abu Dhabi, enabling the company to establish its international tokenization hub within the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM). This strategic move marks a critical step for Coinbase in building an infrastructure that promotes a more open and accessible global financial system.

The license from the FSRA allows Coinbase to facilitate investment transactions and provide custody services, simplifying the process for tokenized securities to enter the market. This development is crucial as it aims to provide access to a segment of the population that has long been excluded from capital markets. With an estimated four billion individuals globally lacking access to investment opportunities, this initiative seeks to dismantle existing barriers and lower participation costs significantly.

Importance of Tokenization

The tokenized securities that will be issued and registered in the ADGM are fully covered by underlying equities and will be backed by verification from token holders, who will enjoy complete shareholder rights, including dividends and voting rights. Notably, investors will neither require a broker account nor a correspondent banking relationship; a simple digital wallet will suffice. Additionally, all transfers will undergo ongoing sanctions checks, ensuring that regulatory integrity remains in place without conflicting with DeFi initiatives.

Brett Tejpaul, Co-CEO of Coinbase Institutional, remarked, “ADGM has released one of the world’s first regulatory frameworks for virtual assets. This framework was developed to reflect a genuine institutional commitment to innovation-oriented regulation, aligning with the rigorous standards demanded by global financial markets.”

He further highlighted that, to date, no major financial center has crafted a framework that addresses tokenized equities as securities, blockchain-native tokens, and DeFi-compatible assets concurrently.

Abu Dhabi: A Global Financial Hub

The establishment of Coinbase's tokenization center in Abu Dhabi significantly underscores the emirate's growing influence in shaping the future of international finance. Arvind Ramamurthy, Chief Market Development Officer at ADGM, expressed confidence in the advanced and internationally focused regulatory framework of ADGM, which continues to inspire trust among leading global institutions.

Ramamurthy stated, “As tokenization becomes an increasingly integral part of capital market infrastructure, ADGM is committed to fostering innovations that enhance market access, transparency, and investor confidence while upholding the highest standards of regulatory oversight.”

The opening of this international tokenization hub is part of a broader commitment to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Coinbase's investments in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai aim to cultivate two of its most ambitious global business segments outside the U.S.: a central hub for tokenized securities and on-chain capital markets, alongside a global center for derivatives.

This initiative highlights Coinbase's confidence in the UAE as a location for next-generation financial infrastructure. The FSRA’s regulatory approval provides Coinbase with a robust structure, allowing it to bring capital markets to those who need it most. As the global finance landscape evolves, the integration of on-chain technology is poised to shape future developments in the sector.

In conclusion, Coinbase’s establishment of its tokenization hub in Abu Dhabi represents not only a vital win for the company but also an essential step towards enabling greater participation in global capital markets, demonstrating the potential and necessity of innovation in the financial sector.
