Introducing PRIME SLEEP: Designing Bedrooms for Optimal Sleep Environments

Enhancing Sleep Quality with PRIME SLEEP

Sumitomo Forestry Corporation, under the leadership of President Toshirou Mitsuyoshi, has launched an innovative project named PRIME SLEEP, which focuses on creating optimal bedroom environments aimed at improving sleep quality. Initiated on September 17, this program is specifically designed for customers considering Sumitomo Forestry's homes, combining the company's expertise in design with its unique wood material components to help address contemporary sleep-related challenges.

The Science Behind PRIME SLEEP

PRIME SLEEP integrates extensive knowledge in interior design with original wooden interior components branded as PRIME WOOD. This initiative is supported by research conducted at the Tsukuba Research Institute, where studies have explored the impact of environmental factors such as wood, light, and sound on sleep quality. By optimizing these elements based on scientific principles, PRIME SLEEP aims to create a luxurious bedroom environment conducive to quality sleep from the moment one goes to bed until waking up.

In recent years, the importance of sleep has gained considerable attention, not only for maintaining health but also for enhancing daily performance and quality of life. As public interest in products and services that support sleep continues to rise, the necessity for creating sleep-friendly environments has also become more evident.

Components of PRIME SLEEP

PRIME SLEEP carefully categorizes the sleep experience into three primary scenes: when falling asleep, while sleeping, and upon waking. Each of these phases is tailored for comfort, ensuring that every aspect of the sleep cycle is thoughtfully catered to. To achieve this, five essential design elements are emphasized:

1. Effects of Wood: Research from the Tsukuba Institute reveals that rooms decorated with wooden interiors lead to higher satisfaction levels during sleep compared to those with conventional white walls. Utilizing the properties of wood to absorb harmful blue light wavelengths, along with the premium wood materials from the PRIME WOOD initiative, creates a more favorable environment for rest.

2. Lighting Design: The design allows for adaptable lighting conditions specific to both the falling asleep phase and the waking process. The transition of light colors and brightness within the bedroom simulates natural daylight patterns, establishing a calm environment for sleep initiation and a stimulating atmosphere for waking.

3. Sound Design: With a target sound level of below 40 decibels, the bedroom's auditory environment is meticulously crafted. Using heavy curtains and sound-absorbing materials, as well as strategic room layouts, PRIME SLEEP fosters a serene and quiet space, enhancing sleep quality.

4. Air Quality Management: Leveraging Sumitomo Forestry's advanced 360° TRIPLE Insulation technology and the natural hygroscopic properties of wood, the design promotes a temperature-regulated environment to complement sleep, ensuring comfortable thermal conditions throughout the night.

5. Spatial Harmony: An atmosphere created by a blend of natural materials, such as wood and fabrics, conveys tranquility and relaxation. The inclusion of low ceilings and decorative interior greenery contributes to feelings of security and rejuvenation while minimizing fatigue.

Addressing Sleep-related Issues

A survey conducted by the Japan Sleep Science Research Institute revealed that approximately 65% of participants expressed dissatisfaction with their sleep quality. With sleep disorders becoming more recognized in the medical field, the importance of sleep as a critical health topic is garnering increased public attention. Sumitomo Forestry has been at the forefront of understanding the relationship between wooden materials and sleep quality since 2015, combining scientific findings with its design expertise to propose comfortable sleeping solutions.

Through the PRIME SLEEP offering, Sumitomo Forestry aims to enhance the quality of life for customers while addressing societal challenges surrounding sleep health. The broader mission of the Sumitomo Forestry Group involves a holistic approach to forestry management, encompassing product development, residential building, and bioenergy initiatives, all centered around wood's potential to impact both our homes and the environment positively.
