MetaOptics Advances Smartphone Integration with Tunable Metalens Technology for Fingerprint Biometrics

MetaOptics Unveils Innovative Metalens Module for 3D Biometrics

In a significant leap for biometric technology, MetaOptics Ltd (Catalist: 9MT) has unveiled plans for a groundbreaking compact optical module aimed to enhance 3D non-contact fingerprint biometrics. This innovative module is being designed with the potential for integration into smartphones and other consumer devices. The project is poised to revolutionize how biometric authentication can be implemented, pushing the boundaries of current technology.

Development Overview

The new module builds on MetaOptics' existing 3D sensing capabilities, focusing on reducing the size of the optical stack and introducing electronic tuning features. This development aims to improve imaging performance without the complexities usually associated with mechanical components. By leveraging collaboration with a national institute in Singapore, MetaOptics is transitioning cutting-edge optical research into commercially viable and scalable product solutions, highlighting their commitment to advancing secure identity systems.

At the core of the optical module lies a unique tunable flat-lens optical stack. Unlike traditional lenses that are curved, the innovative flat optical elements engineered by MetaOptics utilize nanostructures to effectively shape and focus light, resulting in an exceptionally compact optical assembly. The construction of this module features two ultra-thin metalenses fabricated on glass substrates, separated by a mere 100 µm liquid crystal layer—comparable to the thickness of a human hair.

Fans of technology will be intrigued by the electronically adjustable functionality provided by the liquid crystal layer. By applying voltage, the optical characteristics of the module can be fine-tuned, enabling adaptability that traditional mechanical focusing methods lack. This new design approach not only allows for substantial size reductions but also enhances reliability, moving away from bulky mechanical options that can be prone to failures.

Impressive Specifications and Applications

Each of the two metalenses, measuring only 2.0 mm in diameter and placed on a 0.775 mm glass substrate, forms an optical stack with a total thickness of about 1.65 mm. The entire module is targeted for a thickness of around 5 mm, making it feasible for incorporation into space-constrained consumer electronics such as modern smartphones and notebooks. The initial design uses a green wavelength of 532 nm, combined with a monochrome image sensor and control electronics for capturing detailed fingerprint features.

Dr. Tobias W. W. Mass, VP of Systems at MetaOptics, remarked on the implementation of liquid crystal-based spatial light modulators in achieving stable, repeatable optical performance within a compact setup. He expressed excitement over utilizing this technology to create an autofocus mechanism for a metalens imaging system, which signifies an important transition for the company.

A Leap in Biometric Solutions

MetaOptics’ upgraded metalens technology moves beyond the passive operation of existing market biometric modules, pushing towards an “active” optical framework. This shift enables electronic adjustments for optimizing fingerprint capture, increasing security through enhanced 3D biometric accuracy. It also promotes a cleaner, non-contact alternative to conventional fingerprint systems, fundamentally changing the landscape of biometric authentication technology.

The company plans to showcase this innovative 3D biometric sensing module equipped with the advanced tunable metalens at CES 2027, set to be held in Las Vegas next January. This demonstration is expected to further establish the effectiveness of the new module, which promises heightened precision, reduced device size, and improved hygiene compared to existing 2D biometric technologies.

As advancements continue, additional updates about the development of this metalens module will be made available. With its focus on innovation and user-centric design, MetaOptics is poised to significantly influence the field of biometric technology and consumer electronics.
