Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo Introduces Traditional Dyeing Workshops
Starting on July 9, 2025, the Keio Plaza Hotel in Tokyo will launch a series of engaging workshops focused on the art of dyeing, designed to immerse participants into the unique textile traditions of Shinjuku. This initiative aims to showcase the area’s rich history, dating back to the Edo period (1603-1867), while appealing to both locals and international visitors.
In collaboration with the Shinjuku Textile Dyers Association, the hotel will provide hands-on experiences where participants can learn techniques such as stencil and tie-dyeing directly from skilled artisans. These workshops not only highlight the intricacies of Japan's dyeing culture but also allow guests to appreciate the local craftsmanship in a casual and approachable manner.
A Cultural Celebration
Shinjuku is well-known for its vibrant textile scene, and through these workshops, the Keio Plaza Hotel aims to bridge the gap between traditional artistry and contemporary tourist experiences. Participants will have the opportunity to work on their own dyeing projects, thereby creating personal souvenirs that reflect their newfound skills and appreciation for Japanese culture.
In addition to the hands-on dyeing sessions, attendees will also enjoy an exhibition of beautifully crafted festive kimonos from the Shinjuku collection. This exhibit features approximately 15 intricately designed kimonos, showcasing the vibrant colors and patterns that make Shinjuku textiles renowned across Japan.
Special Workshops Schedule
The workshops are scheduled to occur on several dates throughout the summer and early fall:
- - July 9 (Wednesday)
- - August 8 (Friday)
- - September 27 (Saturday)
- - October (TBD)
These events will take place in the hotel’s 3rd-floor lobby in the South Tower, creating an inviting atmosphere for participants. Guests will be guided through the dyeing processes and will witness live demonstrations by local artisans.
Unique Souvenirs from Shinjuku
In addition to learning about the art of dyeing, attendees will be able to purchase exclusive products from the 'Azalee' brand, which celebrates the azalea flower emblematic of Shinjuku. Items for sale include tote bags, pouches, hand towels, and business card holders, making for perfect keepsakes that embody the spirit of Shinjuku's floral beauty.
These workshops represent more than just a craft—they are a way for the hotel to enrich the value of each stay through meaningful cultural experiences. Recognizing the growing desire among travelers to connect with local traditions, Keio Plaza Hotel seeks to provide a platform for guests to learn about and appreciate Japanese culture.
