Exploring Sustainable Choices in Architecture
The future of architecture and design is taking a sustainable turn with the upcoming
REMARE Plastic SUMMIT Exhibition, set to take place from
June 14 to June 22, 2025, at the
SKWAT KAMEARI ART CENTRE (SKAC) in Katsushika, Tokyo. Hosted by
REMARE and organized in collaboration with the
Sewn, this exhibition aims to highlight new possibilities in using domestic recycled plastics in architecture and product design.
Innovative Prototypes
Participants in the exhibition include five innovative architects and designers who have created prototypes utilizing a variety of approaches that showcase the unique properties of recycled plastic materials. This project offers the chance to rethink material selection and explore questions surrounding how recycled plastics can evolve from alternatives to standards in the architectural realm. By confronting traditional design norms, these creators are making bold statements about the potential for recycled materials to contribute meaningfully to our built environment.
Diverse Approaches to Sustainable Design
The event will kick off with an opening ceremony on
June 15, featuring a series of insightful talks with prominent figures in the architecture and design community. Distinguished speakers include
Yuko Nagayama, known for her pavilion designs at the Osaka-Kansai Expo;
Akira Fujimoto, an artist exploring social and environmental themes;
Akihiro Kato, co-representative of the creative association CEKAI; and
Keisuke Nakamura, representative of SKWAT and DAIKEI MILLS. This group will engage in a diverse dialogue exploring the influence of recycled plastics on the fields of architecture, art, and society.
Addressing Plastic Waste
As the world is overwhelmed with plastic waste, this initiative serves as a clarion call to rethink our relationship with plastic materials. The exhibition emphasizes that recycled plastics must transition from merely being alternatives to becoming essential components of sustainable design practices. By framing material choices in this context, REMARE Plastic SUMMIT positions itself not just as a showcase, but as a significant player in the movement towards a more sustainable future—one where materials are selected not only for their utility but also for their impact on the environment.
Artist and Speaker Profiles
Each of the five participating creators brings a unique perspective to the table. Among those featured is
Shinpei Ogawa, a design fabricator focusing on the intersection of digital and physical design processes;
Rikuo Takada, a product and interior designer inspired by traditional craftsmanship; and
PULSE, a creative duo exploring new design possibilities that transcend conventional boundaries. Through their innovative approaches, these designers aim to change the narrative surrounding plastic materials, exploring how they can contribute to creating meaningful and sustainable spaces.
