The Surprising Reasons Why Many Smartphone Users Regret Not Backing Up Data

In today's digital age, the overwhelming majority of smartphone users often find themselves regretting one essential action: backing up their data. A recent survey conducted by Global Gateway Inc., which operates the mobile brand dinomo, involving 1,074 smartphone users between the ages of 20 and 50, uncovered an astonishing revelation: approximately 71.7% of respondents admitted they are not utilizing automatic backups for their devices. Furthermore, about 30.2% indicated they don't back up at all. This raises a critical question: why is this seemingly simple task being overlooked?

The survey indicates a stark contrast between the frequency at which users take photos or videos for social media and their neglect of data backups. Notably, a significant 72.1% stated they have felt overwhelmed by how tedious backing up can be. This dilemma poses an important insight into the psyche of today's smartphone users: recognizing the need for backups, but continually postponing the action due to daily life distractions.

Adding to the growing concern, nearly 50% of participants reported that they have previously regretted not backing up their data, with over 46.5% acknowledging multiple occasions of loss. Individuals shared distressing stories of losing precious memories when their smartphones malfunctioned. This underlines the urgent need for convenient solutions that safeguard their data without the hassle of manual interventions.

Moreover, storage issues are becoming increasingly prevalent. When asked if they have had to delete photos and videos due to device storage limitations, 62.5% of overall participants responded affirmatively. The younger demographic, especially those in their 20s, reported an alarming 76.9% delete rate, signifying severe storage dilemmas that digital natives face.

Looking ahead, when inquired about the anticipated growth of storage needs for photos and videos, nearly half (49.6%) believe their requirements will increase by at least 1.5 times, driven by advances in AI and higher resolution media. Without immediate solutions, the likelihood of reaching storage capacity will become even more critical.

A common sentiment among survey respondents was a resistance to paying for cloud storage, with 53.3% stating that they prefer free options. Only 0.9% expressed a willingness to spend over 1,000 yen per month for data storage, underscoring a significant gap between desire for convenience and aversion to costs.

When presented with the idea of a service that automatically provides unlimited backups, nearly 80% of individuals expressed interest in utilizing such a service. Additionally, a striking 86.9% were interested in using a free option, highlighting a burgeoning demand ready to be met.
