GOSSO Acquires Tokiwa Foods: A New Era in Dining
On September 1, GOSSO Corporation, headquartered in Shibuya, Tokyo, successfully acquired all shares of Tokiwa Foods, based in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. The acquisition, effective from April 1, 2025, elevates Tokiwa Foods as a wholly-owned subsidiary and marks a significant move in GOSSO's strategy to strengthen its presence in the dining sector across Japan.
GOSSO operates a diverse range of dining establishments including izakayas, barbecue spots, and dessert shops throughout the country. This strategic acquisition aims to boost GOSSO's foothold, particularly in the Tohoku region, emphasizing new brand development and initiatives. The new headquarters, which also serves as GOSSO’s Tohoku branch, has officially opened in Sendai, solidifying the corporation’s commitment to regional growth.
Background of the Acquisition
The relationship between GOSSO and Tokiwa Foods goes back to 2018 when the two companies first discussed a potential M&A. Though those discussions did not lead to an agreement at the time, both companies recognized the need for strategic partnership as Tokiwa Foods celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. In light of recent developments, GOSSO President Ken Fujita proposed a renewed offer that aligned both companies' visions and goals. As a result, Tokiwa Foods has now become a subsidiary, aiming to enhance quality and service delivery significantly.
Currently, Tokiwa operates 24 locations, and with this acquisition, there are plans for rebranding under the “Tokiwa Tei” name while developing franchises across the Tohoku area. The objective is to establish Tokiwa as the premier “town barbecue” chain, with a target of 40 locations by 2028.
Expansion and Future Growth Strategies
This acquisition comes in the context of GOSSO's intention to solidify its operations and expand nationally. The new office in Sendai is integral to GOSSO’s strategy for brand development, personnel training, and logistics optimization. By October 8, 2025, GOSSO plans to open new dining concepts within the upcoming Aeon Mall Sendai Uesugi, including an all-day dining establishment named “Aloha Melt Terrace,” featuring a blend of Hawaiian and Italian cuisines, as well as new brands focused on Japanese-style noodles and fried chicken. These openings signify the commencement of a focused growth strategy in the Tohoku market intended to accelerate nationwide expansion.
Sustainable Business Model through M&A and Rebranding
Looking forward, GOSSO aims to create a sustainable enterprise model that incorporates mergers and acquisitions, rebranding, and franchise development. In 2024, GOSSO intends to further diversify by making Takata Commerce a subsidiary and acquiring the tart shop Tartarie. These strategic moves will allow GOSSO to expand its operational scope significantly. Currently, it serves a range of brands, including “Sandaime Jigemontton” focusing on Japanese cuisine, “Jigemontan” for noodle dishes, and “Tartarie” for café sweets, among others, all aiming for robust franchise expansions and enhanced profitability.
