Specialty Food Association's Bill Lynch to Step Down as President in March 2027
Bill Lynch's Leadership Journey at the Specialty Food Association
Bill Lynch, the driving force behind the Specialty Food Association (SFA), has announced that he will conclude his presidency in March 2027. With over 25 years of dedicated service to the organization, Lynch's tenure marks a significant chapter in the evolution of the specialty food industry. Under his leadership, the SFA not only navigated through challenging times but also achieved remarkable growth and innovation.
Lynch took over the presidency in 2020, right as the pandemic was reshaping the landscape for businesses across the globe. Faced with unprecedented challenges, he led the SFA through a critical recovery period, revitalizing the Fancy Food Shows which are paramount industry events. The successful relaunch of these shows, alongside the introduction of the innovative Winter FancyFaire, has cemented the SFA’s position at the forefront of the specialty food sector.
In just a few years, Lynch's strategic vision resulted in phenomenal outcomes: SFA membership jumped from 3,912 to an impressive 4,868 companies, a growth rate of 24%. Revenue experienced a 50% increase, climbing from $20.6 million to $31.1 million. Concurrently, the organization’s total assets ballooned from $56.8 million to $86.5 million—an astounding 52% growth. These numbers reflect not only success but also a robust and thriving community keen on supporting one another in the specialty food realm.
Lynch’s leadership also fostered a workplace environment that was recognized as a 'Great Place to Work' for three consecutive years. This accolade attests to the positive organizational culture that Lynch and his team have developed, demonstrating a profound commitment to serving their members and the wider specialty food community. "After more than 25 years, I believe it is the right time to step away from my role as President, leaving the Association strong and ready for its next stage," Lynch stated, reflecting his pride in the accomplishments shared with his team.
The Board of Directors, under the chairmanship of Scott Jensen, expressed immense gratitude for Lynch’s contributions to the SFA during these transformative years. Jensen noted, "Bill has provided extraordinary service to our organization and has been a pillar for the specialty food industry, leading us through significant adversity. Thanks to his groundwork, we are in a strong position as we undertake this leadership transition."
As Lynch prepares for his departure, the SFA Board has initiated a comprehensive national search for his successor, enlisting the services of ForceBrands, an executive search firm with a keen understanding of the consumer products sector. This search aims to ensure continuity, preserve momentum, and address the long-term needs of both SFA's members and the specialty food industry at large.
Lynch will remain in office until March 2027 to ensure a smooth handover, focusing on continuing to support his team and the Association through this pivotal transition. "I am excited about what the future holds for the SFA and the specialty food community we have nurtured together," he expressed.
Founded in 1952, the Specialty Food Association plays an indispensable role in the $219-billion specialty food industry, advocating for a diverse community of makers, buyers, and service providers. It supports its members through a variety of events, educational resources, and programs designed to champion industry participation and success. The transition period is expected to be seamless, allowing SFA's ongoing initiatives like member services, educational programming, industry partnerships, events, and trade shows to continue uninterrupted.
The SFA's commitment to advancing the specialty food sector remains unwavering, and as Lynch steps down, the organization looks ahead to a promising future with renewed energy and focus.
