Comprehensive Survey on Sustainability in the Food Sector
The Institute of Distribution Economics (IDE), headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, is launching a
sustainability survey targeting the food manufacturing and retail sectors. This initiative, which begins on
June 2, 2025, seeks to gather valuable insights from companies committed to sustainable practices in order to address the pressing issues of food waste and human rights considerations in the industry.
In recent years, the food sector has seen increasing demands to pivot towards sustainable business practices, yet the approaches taken vary significantly among different companies. This survey aims to compile a cross-sectional analysis to shed light on current sustainability practices within the food industry and to aid in formulating future strategies for sustainable growth across the sector.

retailing within Japan.
Who Should Participate?
The survey is directed at individuals responsible for sustainability initiatives in their organizations or those in equivalent positions. This initiative invites participants to share their experiences and perspectives on the current state of sustainability in their operations.
Confidentiality Assurance
All individual responses will be kept confidential. The IDE guarantees that no companies will be named individually in any published materials. Participants can thus respond to the questionnaire without concern.
Ranking Publication
Once the survey concludes, the top 30 companies based on survey responses will be ranked and publicly acknowledged. However, only those companies that agree to disclosure will have their names published.
Report Distribution
Participants will receive a comprehensive report post-survey, detailing the collective findings and insights from the data collected. The report will illustrate how their responses compare to others in the sector and include critical analyses derived from the survey results, providing valuable benchmarks for all participants.
