Nulab Introduces Principal Engineer Program to Enhance Technical Leadership

Nulab's Groundbreaking Principal Engineer Program

In an effort to elevate its engineering capabilities, Nulab, a company based in Fukuoka, Japan, announced the introduction of the Principal Engineer (PE) program, effective April 2026. This initiative is aimed at defining a role that directly contributes to business growth through technical leadership and influence. By establishing this program, Nulab seeks to create an environment where engineers focused on leveraging technology can tackle critical management challenges with high discretion and responsibility in research and development.

Defining the Role of Principal Engineers

The Principal Engineers at Nulab will serve as technical partners to the management team, responsible for the formulation and promotion of long-term technical strategies and visions. They will not be confined to routine tasks; rather, they will lead the resolution of cross-business technical challenges and conduct research in advanced fields such as AI. In addition to their contributions to nurturing next-generation leaders and fostering a robust technical culture, they will also engage in external outreach through public speaking, writing, and open-source software activities, thereby advancing Nulab's technical branding. These efforts aim to embody innovation through technological excellence.

First Principal Engineers Appointed

With the launch of the program, Nulab has awarded the title of Principal Engineer to three outstanding individuals who have significantly influenced the organization by solving technical issues across various projects:

Yuichi Watanabe

Hired in 2015, Yuichi played a crucial role in refreshing the Git foundation of Backlog and enhancing the reliability of the Git functions. He successfully optimized infrastructure costs and established the “AI Integration Unit,” which focuses on AI at the company level. His achievements, including the discovery of vulnerabilities in the Go language cryptography library, demonstrate his extensive global technical contributions.

Yuki Yoshiiwa

Joining in 2018, Yuki dramatically improved the efficiency of container operations and enhanced reliability by integrating monitoring systems. He was a pioneer in driving “Platform Engineering,” which supports development infrastructure across the company. His initiatives, aimed at creating an environment for AI-driven development and visualizing engineering productivity, significantly reinforced the technical foundations necessary for autonomous growth within the engineering organization.

Hisatome Futahashi

Also hired in 2018, Hisatome is a recognized specialist with numerous advanced external certifications, including being an “AWS Top Engineer.” He has established trust through his work on foundational aspects of products that require reliability, such as the audit logs for Nulab Pass, and has shown influence in cloud cost optimization via FinOps practices. His contributions have raised Nulab’s technical presence through various public platforms, including features in AWS official publications.

Looking to the Future

Through the implementation of this program, Nulab aims to enhance the quality of technical decision-making needed as its products evolve and grow in complexity, solidifying its technical superiority. The company also targets the engineering community to propose a new career model that highlights how technology can contribute to business and societal advancements.

CEO Masanori Hashimoto's Perspective

In comments regarding the initiative, Nulab CEO Masanori Hashimoto noted, "As we provide higher value services to our customers and our products grow in scale and complexity, we have entered a phase where technical decisions, such as architecture selection, will greatly influence the future of our business. The establishment of the Principal Engineer program allows us to systematically and powerfully advance cross-organizational technical challenges, which were previously reliant on individual initiative."

He emphasized that the Principal Engineer's role is to directly drive business growth through technical leadership. It involves not only exceptional technical skills but also the ability to inspire trust in others to achieve transformational goals, underscoring the importance of high emotional intelligence (EQ) within the team. Hashimoto expressed strong expectations for the inaugural three Principal Engineers to serve as role models, elevating Nulab’s engineering culture to new heights.
