LG Display's Groundbreaking 1-120Hz Laptop Panel Revolutionizes Power Efficiency

In a significant advancement for display technology, LG Display has announced the commencement of mass production for the world's first LCD laptop panel capable of operating with refresh rates from 1Hz to 120Hz. This innovative Oxide 1Hz technology signifies a leap forward in energy efficiency and user experience in laptop functionality.

The key feature of this new panel lies in its smart adaptability. It can seamlessly adjust its refresh rate depending on the screen activity, maximizing both power consumption and visual performance. For instance, during static displays, such as when reading documents or emails, the refresh rate drops to an energy-saving 1Hz. Conversely, when engaging in dynamic activities—such as gaming or streaming videos—the panel ramps up to a full 120Hz, delivering a smoother viewing experience.

Refresh rates measure how often a display updates the image shown per second. Higher refresh rates are crucial for delivering clearer visuals with less flickering, making for an enjoyable viewing experience, especially during high-motion video content. One of the challenges with maintaining a high refresh rate is managing power consumption, particularly during activities that do not require it. LG Display’s advancements in circuit algorithms and panel design have tackled this issue by incorporating new materials that reduce power leakage, thereby allowing the oxide to function effectively during low-refresh-rate operations.

This new technology dramatically improves battery efficiency, enabling laptops to achieve an impressive 48% increase in usage time on a single charge compared to previous solutions. Given that many consumers prioritize mobility in their laptop choices, this enhanced battery life opens up new possibilities for user convenience. With many users increasingly reliant on AI and machine learning tasks—which typically consume considerable amounts of power—laptops equipped with the Oxide 1Hz panel are expected to gain significant traction in the market.

In collaboration with Dell, LG Display will supply the new laptop panels for Dell's premium XPS lineup, which showcased the innovative technology at CES 2026 in January. Furthermore, LG Display is already looking ahead, planning to begin mass production of a 1Hz OLED panel featuring similar technology by 2027.

The company continues to pursue groundbreaking advancements to support its Carbon Emission Reduction Project, which aims to lower carbon emissions during product usage by up to 10%. As Jae-won Jang, Head of LG Display's Medium Display Product Planning Division, emphasized, the goal is to provide differentiated customer value through cutting-edge technology that optimizes laptop battery efficiency.

As the tech industry evolves, LG Display's development of the 1-120Hz variable refresh rate panel represents a remarkable innovation, promising enhanced user experiences while being mindful of energy consumption in an increasingly environmentally conscious market. This technological breakthrough may well set the standard for future laptop displays, blending performance with sustainability.
