Essity's Q3 2026 Interim Report: Stable Performance Amid Challenges

Essity's Interim Report for Q3 2026

In the recently released interim report for the third quarter of 2026, Essity demonstrated a strategically resilient performance amid challenging market conditions. The report highlights an increase in net sales, stable volumes, and a strong cash flow that showcases the company's operational efficiency and competitive advantage.

Financial Overview
Essity recorded net sales of SEK 36,060 million, representing a 4.1% increase compared to SEK 34,638 million from the same period last year. However, organic sales experienced a slight decline of 0.3%. Breaking it down further, the volume growth was down by 0.1%, while price and mix adjustments accounted for a 0.2% reduction. Despite the upward trend in revenue, EBITA fell to SEK 3,636 million from SEK 5,152 million due to higher operational costs, reflecting pressures that are affecting many businesses within the industry. After excluding items affecting comparability (IACs), EBITA offered a slightly better view at SEK 4,725 million.

The EBITA margin, when IACs were excluded, was recorded at 13.1%, a drop from 14.6% year-on-year. Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) also witnessed a decline, landing at 11.9%, compared to 17.9% in the previous year, and 15.5% when excluding IAC.

Cash Flow and Profitability
Operating cash flow remained robust at SEK 5,783 million, showcasing Essity's efficiency in managing its financial robust health despite ongoing market turbulence. One notable aspect of this report was the drop in profit for the quarter, amounting to SEK 2,346 million against SEK 3,358 million from the previous year's same quarter, leading to a decrease in earnings per share from SEK 4.86 to SEK 3.47.

Acquisition Strategy
Reflecting its growth ambitions, Essity announced a significant step in its strategic endeavors through the acquisition of Kenvue's feminine care business in Brazil. This acquisition includes prominent brands like Carefree, Sempre Livre, and o.b., which are expected to propel Essity’s position in the booming feminine care market in Latin America. This deal, which is subject to regulatory approval, is projected to finalize by the second quarter of 2027 and is seen as part of Essity’s broader strategy to bolster its market share in the feminine hygiene sector, building on prior acquisitions in North America.

Market Segments Performance
The report further detailed the performance across various market segments. The Health & Medical division saw promising organic growth and solid profitability, driven predominantly by the incontinence products line, which continued to thrive. The positive sales trajectory was also noted in Medical Solutions, particularly in wound care products. In contrast, the Personal Care category similarly exhibited strength, with increasing market shares in incontinence and feminine care products, despite seeing challenges in Consumer Tissue where sales experienced a decline due to reduced volumes.

Professional Hygiene maintained solid profitability, though volumes faltered within base assortments and smaller distributors amidst market weaknesses. Nonetheless, strategic growth was evident as larger distributors documented increased sales during this quarter.

Looking Ahead
With a clear focus on navigating through cost pressures, Essity has instituted proactive measures including ongoing price adjustments and operational efficiency improvements. Senior management expressed a commitment to accelerating profitable growth and enhancing investment focus on areas with the highest potential returns.

CEO Ulrika Kolsrud remarked, "Our ambition is to convert strong market positions into sustainable growth and profitability. We will prioritize initiatives that amplify our growth impact going forward."

The strategic review of the Consumer Tissue segment continues, with plans underway to evaluate the best potential paths for value creation moving forward. As the company eyes future growth opportunities, particularly in Latin America, Essity seems poised to build on its competitive advantages even in uncertain market conditions.

Overall, Essity's Q3 2026 report reflects a mixture of steadfast execution and adaptive strategies demonstrating the company's resilience in maintaining market leadership while navigating through transient challenges.
