Dentsu Research Institute Launches Verifiable Credentials Solution to Enhance Digital Trust

Dentsu Research Institute Unveils Digital Credential Management Solution

Dentsu Research Institute, headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, is making strides in the realm of digital security with the launch of a new solution for issuing, managing, and verifying digital certificates, known as Verifiable Credentials (VC). Starting April 14, the company will collaborate with partner firms to initiate a Proof of Concept (PoC) aimed at implementing this innovative technology.

Verifiable Credentials are digital certificates affirmed by trustworthy third parties, designed to enhance the reliability of data exchange between individuals and organizations. Issuers, which can include corporations, municipalities, and educational institutions, provide personal VCs based on information they hold. Certificate holders can securely manage their VCs via a digital ID wallet and present them during transactions or services to service providers, who can then verify the certificates' authenticity through digital signatures.

The new solution from Dentsu Research Institute aims to establish a framework for VCs that enables secure information exchanges, fostering trust amongst personal users and service providers.

Context and Industry Background

The advancement of digital society has heightened risks such as data breaches and unauthorized alterations, compelling businesses to prioritize the protection and trustworthiness of personal data in digital platforms. As a solution to these challenges, there is an increasing expectation for technologies like VCs that ensure data integrity. Over the years, Dentsu Research Institute has been engaged in various technical studies to develop the concept of a Trusted Web, which ensures the reliability of information circulated online. This effort includes participation in a project aimed at realizing a trustworthy transaction model based on KYC/KYB (Know Your Customer/Know Your Business) principles, endorsed by Japan's Digital Agency.

The upcoming VC solution builds upon these insights and experiences, with a scheduled launch aimed for fall 2025.

Overview and Features of the Solution

The VC issuance solution consists of a Web API for issuing and verifying VCs, along with a “Digital ID Wallet” for managing these credentials. By leveraging the Web API, issuers can distribute VCs, which can then be securely stored in the Digital ID Wallet by the holders and presented as needed. Verifiers can quickly confirm VC authenticity through the Web API.

Notable features of the VC solution include:
1. Adoption of Authlete 3.0: This solution follows the OID4VC (OpenID for Verifiable Credentials) standards for issuing VCs, based on OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect protocols, fostering a globally standardized authorization and authentication process.
2. Digital ID Wallet Implementation: The Digital ID Wallet is based on the EU's Digital Identity Regulation (eIDAS 2.0) reference implementation, thereby enhancing international interoperability.
3. Data Format Adoption: Utilizing mdoc/SD-JWT VC, the solution incorporates standardized protocols grounded in ISO/IEC18013-5/23220, allowing flexibility in selective data disclosure.

Co-creation Proof of Concept

To explore the potential of VCs and realize the Trusted Web concept, Dentsu Research Institute is seeking partner companies for their co-creation PoC. Testing will be conducted under near-real business conditions to effectively verify the planned functionalities.

Planned Features and Services: Programs related to VC issuance and verification, construction manuals, and a digital ID wallet application.
Application Period: Until May 31, 2025.
Application Method: Interested parties can apply through the designated form. Note that due to application volume, some may be declined based on company criteria.

Insights from Authlete Executive

Takihiko Kawasaki, Co-Founder and CEO of Authlete, expressed optimism regarding Dentsu Research Institute’s initiative, emphasizing its significance in paving the future of VCs. He stated that the robustness of Authlete 3.0 would underpin a secure and interoperable VC issuance platform, allowing a wider audience to benefit from this transformative technology.

Future Directions

In the coming phases, Dentsu Research Institute plans to examine the effectiveness and challenges of the VC issuance, management, and verification system, setting the stage for product availability. Moreover, the institute is committed to promoting the adoption of VCs and expanding their usage across businesses, government entities, and educational institutions, ultimately contributing to enhancing trust in the digital ecosystem and creating a safer transactional environment.
