New Pathway Program Designed for Health Profession Aspirants

In an important step toward enhancing health care education accessibility, Western University of Health Sciences (WesternU) has formed a partnership with Sonoma State University. This collaboration aims to develop a new pathway program tailored for students with aspirations in physical therapy and osteopathic medicine.

Through this initiative, Sonoma State students interested in health professions will have streamlined access to advanced degrees offered at WesternU's Lebanon campus. More specifically, students can now pursue either a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at the College of Health Sciences-Northwest or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at the Heatherington College of Osteopathic Medicine (WesternU HCOM).

Seeking a seamless transition from undergraduate studies to professional programs can often present challenges such as prerequisite coursework and competitive admission processes. Recognizing this hurdle, the new pathway program has been structured to support high-achieving undergraduate students. Participants are guaranteed an interview with WesternU HCOM or CHS-Northwest and will benefit from a waived application fee at CHS-Northwest.

According to Heather Phipps, DO, MBA, FAAOS, the Site Dean of WesternU HCOM, “Pathway programs like ours represent one of the most impactful ways to assist students pursuing careers in the medical field. This new agreement with Sonoma State provides essential guidance, mentorship, and a structured route to medical education.” Phipps emphasizes the importance of this collaboration in helping students achieve their professional goals while serving the communities in need.

The excitement is echoed by Jonathan Perry, MSc, PhD, the Site Dean at CHS-Northwest, who stated, “We are thrilled to see this partnership come to life. Proposed students from Sonoma State University can now apply to our Doctor of Physical Therapy program without cost and receive a guaranteed interview.” He added that interest among Sonoma State students has already surged, with many submitting inquiries and attending recruitment events.

This pathway not only creates a clear opportunity for undergraduate students but also addresses pressing healthcare workforce shortages in the region.
