Behind the Artist: Tatsundo Ito
Hailing from Fukushima Prefecture, Tatsundo Ito is no stranger to the world of classical music. His educational journey began at the prestigious Tokyo University of the Arts, where he graduated before advancing to the university's graduate school. Additionally, he honed his craft at the New National Theatre's Opera Training Program and enjoyed further training as a Japanese Government Overseas Research Fellow in Berlin.
Mr. Ito made his operatic debut at the Tokyo Nikikai Opera in 2016, portraying Brighella in
Ariadne auf Naxos. Since then, he has performed in significant roles, such as the title character in
Parsifal, the Emperor in
Die Frau ohne Schatten, and Count Vaudemont in
Iolanta/The Nutcracker. Each of these roles displayed his versatility and profound expressiveness as a tenor.
He has also graced the New National Theatre with notable performances in operas such as
The Magic Flute,
Hansel and Gretel, and
Lucia di Lammermoor, showcasing his wide-ranging repertoire. Notably, he portrayed the philosopher Daisetsu Suzuki in the opera
Zen, highlighting his ability to bridge the gap between classical and contemporary narratives in performance.
