Harvest Midstream and IGU Achieve Milestone with First LNG Delivery from North Slope to Fairbanks

In a groundbreaking development for Alaskan energy, Harvest Midstream (Harvest) and Interior Gas Utility (IGU) have successfully completed the first delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the North Slope to Fairbanks. This historic event marks the first commercial sale of natural gas from the North Slope to communities outside the Arctic, a significant milestone in the region's energy landscape. Reports from Jason C. Rebrook, CEO of Harvest, emphasize that this achievement signifies the beginning of a new era where North Slope gas will not just remain isolated; it will contribute directly to powering Alaska's future.

Harvest's LNG facility, situated near Deadhorse, plays a pivotal role in this endeavor, with a production capacity of up to 150,000 gallons of LNG per day, effectively tripling the output of IGU's current plant. Designed with future expansion in mind, it is expected to adapt to growing market demands, ultimately facilitating over 8 million cubic feet of daily gas deliveries as infrastructure improvements take place.

Transitioning homes and businesses from traditional fuel sources like oil or wood to natural gas could enhance air quality significantly. The new LNG facility anticipates a reduction of emissions by as much as 2,000 tons annually, primarily addressing particulate matter emissions that pose health risks. As Elena Sudduth, IGU's General Manager, stated, this initiative not only advances the energy landscape for Fairbanks but strengthens the entire state's resilience regarding energy security.

Since its inception in Alaska in 2014, Harvest Midstream has progressively carved out a critical niche in the state's infrastructure, including the acquisition of BP’s midstream assets, which granted them a 49 percent ownership interest in the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS). This strategic positioning strengthens Harvest's role as a key player in the energy sector, aiming to provide reliable energy solutions for Alaskan families and businesses.
