International Jazz Day 2026: A Night to Remember in Chicago

The 15th edition of International Jazz Day concluded spectacularly with the All-Star Global Concert in the heart of Chicago on May 4, 2026. This highly anticipated event took place at the iconic Lyric Opera House, attracting jazz enthusiasts from around the globe.

Over 40 world-renowned artists shared the stage, including music legends like Dee Dee Bridgewater, James Carter, and the jazz virtuoso Herbie Hancock. The concert commenced with a moving tribute to Chicago, the host city, showcasing its rich musical heritage. Dee Dee Bridgewater and Gregory Porter opened the night with an electrifying rendition of “The In-Crowd,” a homage to legendary jazz musician Ramsey Lewis, firmly setting the tone for what was to follow.

As the celebration of jazz continued, Hancock himself took the stage to deliver a breathtaking reinterpretation of his classic hit “Watermelon Man.” He masterfully blended grooves reminiscent of the 60s Blue Note era with contemporary jazz-funk elements. Another highlight was Buddy Guy, a stalwart of the blues scene, who alongside his protégé Christon “Kingfish” Ingram, delivered a heartfelt performance of “Damn Right, I've Got the Blues,” for which Guy won a Grammy.

The flow of performances throughout the evening kept audiences captivated. Jacob Collier, another standout musician, showcased his extraordinary talent with emotional deliveries of “She's Out of My Life” and “Soul Bossa Nova,” paying tribute to Quincy Jones.

Continuing with the diverse program, Lizz Wright delivered a soulful performance of “Seems I'm Never Tired of Loving You,” before pianist Robert Glasper took the spotlight. Glasper, accompanied by his band, merged jazz with hip-hop in an innovative interpretation of “Funny Rabbit.” Following suit, Brazilian artist Bia Ferreira lit up the stage with her vibrant performance of “Antes de Ir.”

The night also featured Béla Fleck, who played “Touch and Go,” demonstrating his superb ability to intertwine various musical styles, including bluegrass and jazz-rock. Dianne Reeves captivated the audience with Duke Ellington's classic “In a Sentimental Mood,” showcasing her remarkable vocal elegance and depth. Kurt Elling followed with a spiritual interpretation of “Dat Dere,” originally penned by Bobby Timmons.

As the concert drew to a close, Gonzalo Rubalcaba delivered energetic performances of “Caravan” and George Gershwin's “Summertime,” honoring John Coltrane's revolutionary take on this beloved tune. Jazz icon Marcus Miller then honored Miles Davis with a striking rendition of “Tutu.” The concert concluded with a powerful collective performance of John Lennon’s “Imagine,” a timeless anthem for peace, as artists and audience members united in a shared moment of harmony.
