Tsushima Future Forum 2025: A Showcase of Collaborative Sustainability Efforts

Tsushima Future Forum 2025: A Collaborative Effort for a Sustainable Future

On December 21, 2025, the Tsushima City Exchange Center hosted the Tsushima Future Forum, a gathering that highlighted the importance of sustainability and collaborative initiatives among various organizations. Jointly organized by the Tsushima City government and the Blue Ocean Initiative, the forum attracted over 220 participants from diverse backgrounds, including citizens, local organizations, businesses, and educational institutions.

The Essence of Tsushima Future Forum

The Tsushima Future Forum seeks to create a platform for sharing research and practical achievements focused on the realization of a sustainable island in the Tsushima region. The forum has evolved from the Tsushima Studies Forum, which started in 2015, integrating with discussions spearheaded by member companies of the Blue Ocean Initiative, introduced in 2023. This marks the forum's first significant gathering aimed at fostering collaboration among industry, academia, and the public sector for the betterment of local community practices.

Highlights from the Forum

Collaboration with Karatsu Farm&Food

One of the standout contributions came from the NPO Karatsu Farm&Food, which presented their successful poster on the theme, “Collaborative SDGs Activities in Tsushima City by Kyushu Exploration Team and Karatsu Farm&Food.” The team previously received recognition for their efforts at last year's Tsushima Studies Forum, and their involvement highlights the growing integration of sustainability education into local schools.

Focus on Marine Plastic Issues

Another key focus was the involvement of the Kyushu Exploration Team—part of the Hakata Daimaru Corporation—which presented on the global marine plastic crisis and highlighted their initiative known as “Precious Plastic.” This program aims to raise awareness and foster community engagement around this pressing environmental issue.

During the afternoon poster presentation session, participants showcased 64 different projects from citizens, students, researchers, and industry professionals, sparking lively discussions and knowledge sharing among attendees.

Reporting on Tsushima Week at the Osaka-Kansai Expo

The morning sessions also included a report on the achievements from “Tsushima Week” at the Osaka-Kansai Expo, which featured collaborative efforts such as the Tsushima Project and the traditional wave-themed ema decoration. Conversations about how to bridge the insights and collaborations experienced at the Expo with local initiatives were particularly valuable.

Engaging Community and Future Prospects

The forum underscored that the true strength of these events lies not just in knowledge-sharing, but in forging connections among participants that inspire future action. The dialogues led to the emergence of the “Blue Ocean Innovation Center” concept proposed by the Blue Ocean Initiative, emphasizing community-led visions for a sustainable future.

A Look Forward

With the valuable connections made during the Tsushima Future Forum, both Karatsu Farm&Food and its partners are committed to nurturing these relationships for ongoing projects. The organization looks forward to continuing its mission of integrating sustainability efforts into local educational initiatives and community practices. Furthermore, they aim to ensure next year’s event will again serve as a gathering space to reinforce these important ties.

The next iteration of the Tsushima Future Forum promises to be just as impactful, emphasizing shared experiences and collaborative efforts that align with the global pursuit of sustainability.
