SALONIA Unveils a Giant Hair Dryer Sculpture to Promote Recycling in Osaka

SALONIA's Impactful Display in Osaka

In a remarkable initiative aimed at promoting sustainability and recycling awareness, the Japanese beauty appliance brand SALONIA, operated by I-ne Inc., recently unveiled a striking giant hair dryer sculpture in Osaka's Midosuji Namba area. From September 23 to September 28, 2025, this installation, composed of over a hundred used small electronic devices, served as a powerful visual message about the importance of recycling in a society striving for sustainability.

Purpose of the Project

SALONIA's project, named 'SALONIA × ReNet BEAUTY CYCLE PROJECT', encapsulates the brand's passion for beautifying both the environment and its customers. The awe-inspiring sculpture stands approximately three meters tall, symbolizing the potential of recycled materials in creating new forms. Unfortunately, Osaka's recycling rate ranks a disappointing 46th among Japan's prefectures, making it essential to raise awareness and inspire a collective responsibility towards proper electronic waste management.

The project highlights the environmental issues by intentionally leaving empty spaces within the sculpture. This design choice serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by inadequate recycling participation. SALONIA collaborated with the Zukaden electronics working group to craft this significant piece, showcasing a blend of artistic vision and environmental advocacy.

Collection Initiatives

Since 2023, SALONIA has established collection boxes for used small appliances at its outlet stores. The brand is set to take this initiative further with a collaboration with ReNet Japan in 2024, which will facilitate a unique and user-friendly recycling program via courier services for small electronic devices. Through these efforts, SALONIA aims to contribute actively to a circular economy and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Iconic Design Elements

The design of the giant sculpture is inspired by SALONIA’s high-end Smooth Shine Dryer model. The structure was painstakingly handmade to accurately mirror the original hair dryer while ensuring the necessary strength to support the embedded small appliances. To replicate the luxurious feel of the Smooth Shine model, the iron framework was painted in a matte black finish.

The neon sign accompanying the sculpture features a simple yet sophisticated white hue, reflecting the elegant branding associated with SALONIA. During the setup, the bustling streets of Osaka's Midosuji Namba area flourished with excitement, as passersby reacted with surprise and delight at the sight of the giant hair dryer.

Community Engagement

During its display period, the gigantic hair dryer sculpture caught the attention of many pedestrians. Individuals could be seen capturing photographs, marveling at the displayed small devices, and scanning QR codes scattered throughout the installation. Conversations erupted, with people expressing newfound insights into recycling and their own unused appliances at home.

The 'BEAUTY CYCLE PROJECT', laden with the message 'for a more beautiful environment and customer experience', successfully sparked a greater awareness about small appliance recycling and inspired people to consider their own recycling habits.

About the 'SALONIA × ReNet Beauty Cycle Project'

Dedicated to responsible production and consumption, SALONIA is committed to the SDG goal of fostering a beautiful society through the sustainable circulation of limited resources. Small electronic devices, including mobile phones and computers, can be repurposed for up to 92% of their material through adequate recycling procedures. The project has already collected 433 kg of small appliances, encouraging individuals to join in during appliance upgrades or during yearly clean-ups.
