Kaiser Permanente, a prominent health care provider, has announced the appointment of Craig T. Albanese, MD, MBA, as the president of Integrated Care and Coverage effective September 29, 2025. Albanese, who previously served as the CEO of Duke University Health System, brings a wealth of experience in health care leadership and operations to this new role.
In his position at Kaiser Permanente, Albanese will oversee day-to-day operations across the integrated health care system. He will also work closely with the Permanente Medical Groups, and will be accountable for driving strategic initiatives and enhancing performance across all the markets served by Kaiser Permanente. This includes direct oversight of various crucial areas such as hospital operations, pharmacy services, human resources, and labor strategy, all of which will report to him.

Albanese’s career spans over 25 years in the health care sector, during which he has held numerous leadership roles in some of the most prestigious academic health systems in the nation. At Duke University Health System, he not only served as CEO but also as executive vice president and chief operating officer, giving him hands-on experience in managing diverse aspects of health care services.
Prior to his tenure at Duke, Albanese played a pivotal role at NewYork-Presbyterian, where he was the chief clinical integration officer and the system chief medical officer. His leadership there contributed to a period of rapid expansion and integration, and he also held the position of chief operating officer for their women’s and children’s hospitals.
An accomplished pediatric surgeon, Albanese's experience includes positions in education, quality, and performance improvement, with significant roles in perioperative services at organizations like Stanford Children's Health and University of California, San Francisco. His diverse background equips him with the skills to effectively navigate the complexities of a sophisticated health care landscape.
In terms of education, Albanese received his undergraduate degree from Washington and Lee University in Virginia, followed by an MBA from the Leavey School of Business at Santa Clara University, culminating in a medical degree from the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn.
