Okayama University Promotes Bicycle Safety for a Cycling-Friendly City by 2025

Okayama University's Commitment to Bicycle Safety

On October 20, 2025, Okayama University, located in Okayama City, embarked on an initiative to promote bicycle etiquette and safety near the Okayama University Entrance intersection along National Route 53. This effort was carried out in collaboration with the Okayama West Police Station, the Okayama City government, local school faculty, and traffic safety organizations from the community. With the participation of 12 students and faculty members from the university, the campaign aimed to encourage adherence to bicycle traffic rules.

The program is part of a larger initiative backed by the Okayama City Kyoyama ESD & SDGs Promotion Council, undertaken three times a year by various organizations to realize the vision of a “cycling-friendly city” in Okayama.

Starting at 8 AM, participants distributed flyers aimed at informing the public about safe bicycle practices. The key messages centered on obeying traffic regulations, the importance of wearing helmets, and securing bicycles against theft with a double-lock mechanism. They specifically warned against common infractions such as using headphones while cycling, riding with umbrellas, and ignoring traffic signals.

Given the rising number of bicycle accidents in Okayama Prefecture, the campaign aimed to emphasize the critical need for compliance with traffic laws. Notably, the area surrounding the Okayama University Entrance intersection has been flagged as one that requires significant enforcement due to repeated requests from the public. Since May 2013, Okayama University has stationed security personnel in this area to bolster awareness of road safety.

Looking ahead, the next promotion of bicycle etiquette is scheduled for January 2026, with ongoing efforts to enhance traffic safety among cyclists. Okayama University, known for its distinctive research programs, continues to advocate for cycling safety in conjunction with community partners.

This campaign showcases the commitment of Okayama University toward not only enhancing student safety but also supporting the community in creating a sustainable urban environment. The university encourages participation from students and local residents alike in achieving these shared goals for a healthier and safer city.

Join in the Efforts
As this initiative progresses, local authorities and community members are encouraged to partake in future cycling etiquette events. Following the established pattern of collaboration, the upcoming launch will build upon previous successes and aim to foster greater awareness of cycling safety in Okayama.

With dedicated representatives and passionate participants, Okayama University is at the forefront of driving a transformative approach towards becoming a recognized cycling capital. Their efforts underscore the significance of sustainability and shared responsibility within urban mobility, as underlined by the university's adherence to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Conclusion
Overall, the proactive measures taken by Okayama University and its partners illustrate a robust framework for enhancing bicycle safety and enforcing traffic rules in a collective effort. The university remains steadfast in its dedication to cultivating a safer and more vibrant community for cyclists, reflecting a future-oriented vision for transportation and urban living.
