Pure DC Achieves 100% Decarbonization Using Biomethane in Europe

Pure Data Centres Group Achieves Milestone in Decarbonization

Pure Data Centres Group (Pure DC), a leader in the development and management of hyper-scale data centers, has announced a groundbreaking accomplishment in its sustainability initiatives by achieving 100% decarbonization of its natural gas consumption at its Dublin facility. This impressive feat was made possible through the successful execution of its first biomethane proof of concept (PoC) in Europe throughout 2025.

The journey towards complete decarbonization began with Pure DC's commitment to offsetting all operational natural gas consumption with renewable biomethane. The company employed independently certified gas attributes and recognized accounting methodologies in both Ireland and Europe, ensuring that all offsets were credible and in alignment with sustainability standards. By utilizing Irish Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs) and European Guarantees of Origin (GOs) for biomethane, Pure DC meticulously tracked gas consumption, fulfilling the criteria for sustainability, traceability, and a robust chain of custody. This aligns with broader European renewable gas market practices and the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).

Moreover, the PoC adheres strongly to Ireland's policies regarding data centers and decarbonization, focusing on emission reduction, transparency, and a gradual transition away from unrestricted fossil fuel use. In doing so, it recognizes the vital role of renewable gases as a transitional solution in scenarios where electrical grid deployment is temporarily limited.

In conjunction with the national strategy for biomethane in Ireland, which outlines a political roadmap for sustainable production and increased demand for renewable gas throughout the economy, Pure DC's acquisition of certified biomethane attributes supports market demand signals essential for the development of Ireland's renewable gas sector. The success of this initiative not only aids in minimizing operational emissions but is expected to invigorate the national renewable gas market.

Recognizing the importance of renewable gas transitionally rather than as a permanent solution, Pure DC is actively exploring Irish biomethane purchase agreements (BPAs) and ongoing EU biomethane imports to enhance supply reliability while also promoting local renewable gas market growth.

Alongside these efforts, the company is pursuing long-term strategies in alignment with Ireland's energy consumer policy and Climate Action Plan. Such strategies include integrating local renewable energy projects, management of demand measures, energy storage deployment, and designing an integrated grid system. This initiative aims to further reduce emissions intensity through smart energy efficiencies.

Since its operational launch in 2024, the Dublin site, known as DUB01, supports high-density workloads powered by cutting-edge energy and cooling infrastructure. Located in the fiber-rich Ballycoolin area, it is designed to deliver up to 54 MW categorized across three data centers: DUB01 (14 MW), DUB02 (24 MW), and DUB03 (16 MW). In 2023, Pure DC expanded by acquiring an additional 25 acres adjacent to the existing site, paving the way for future capacity increases of up to 90 MW, pending the necessary permits and energy sources.

The campus incorporates numerous sustainable practices, like using biochar in landscaping to reduce water consumption and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) for backup energy generation. A robust on-site energy infrastructure ensures operational resilience up to 99.999%, complemented by a 200 MW thermal gas connection. Whenever feasible, there lies potential for future heat export to district heating networks, benefitting local communities and businesses while providing dispatchable generation capacity meeting resilience obligations aligned with Ireland's policies for large energy consumers.
