Celebrating 40 Years of Laughter: The Laugh Factory Comedy Camp Graduation

Laugh Factory Comedy Camp Celebrates 40 Years of Empowering Youth

On July 18th, the iconic Laugh Factory Comedy Camp will hold its 40th-anniversary graduation ceremony from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Laugh Factory Hollywood. This event marks a significant milestone in the camp's mission to empower at-risk youth through the art of comedy. Over the years, the camp has nurtured the talent and confidence of more than 2,500 young individuals aged 9-16, providing them with the skills necessary for public speaking and personal growth.

The camp was founded in 1979, seven years after the Laugh Factory opened its doors to the public. It was a visionary initiative aimed at bringing comedic arts into the lives of those who might otherwise not have the opportunity. Each graduating participant leaves with the same compensation as the professional comedians who grace the Laugh Factory stage, along with a branded hat, shirt, and jacket, emphasizing that everyone deserves acknowledgment for their hard work.

Adding a star-studded highlight to this year’s graduation is Tiffany Haddish, a former camp participant who has risen to international fame. As a teenager, Haddish faced challenges common among at-risk youth, including her experience as a foster child. Today, she returns not only to celebrate the graduates but also to mentor them, sharing her journey to success and encouraging the young comedians to chase their dreams fearlessly.

Haddish takes pride in her roots with the Laugh Factory Comedy Camp and actively participates in supporting today’s youth, sharing invaluable lessons she learned throughout her career. Using her own experience, she inspires the current participants to believe in themselves and embrace their uniqueness, emphasizing how humor can be a powerful tool for navigating life’s challenges.

In a heart-touching act, Haddish recently joined the Comedy Camp kids for lunch, sharing stories and offering practical advice from her own life. She has also used her platform to promote her philanthropic work through the She Ready Foundation, which aims to provide essential resources to foster youth.

One significant initiative of her foundation is providing stylish luggage, in contrast to the black trash bags often given to youth transitioning out of foster care. Haddish's goal is to ensure that over 50,000 youth feel dignified as they move forward into adulthood.

The Laugh Factory continues to offer a unique program allowing teens to explore their creative talents. Previous mentors of the camp have included comedy legends like Richard Pryor, Chris Rock, Robin Williams, and others, each playing a part in shaping young minds and careers in comedy.

The diversity of career paths taken by past graduates underscores the broad impact of the Comedy Camp. Some have gone on to become lawyers or doctors, while others have found their calling in the world of comedy. Jamie Masada, the owner of Laugh Factory, shares, “There are many pathways to success in life, and our Comedy Camp graduates have traveled many of them. No matter what path they choose, we are proud of each of our Comedy Camp kids.”

As the 40th anniversary graduation approaches, anticipation builds for a day filled with laughter, inspiration, and celebration. With Tiffany Haddish’s involvement and the profound impact of the Comedy Camp on the lives of young participants, this event promises to be more than a graduation; it will be a testament to resilience, growth, and the power of laughter.

For those interested in catching a glimpse of Tiffany’s early journey, a special video featuring her reflections on attending the Comedy Camp as a teenager is available, showcasing how far she has come and the vital lessons she learned. This unique intertwining of comedy, mentorship, and youth empowerment continues to define Laugh Factory Comedy Camp as an exceptional program dedicated to fostering the next generation of comedians and leaders.
