Shikoku Electric and Imabari Shipbuilding Launch On-Site Battery Project

Shikoku Electric and Imabari Shipbuilding Unveil New Battery Project

In a significant advancement in renewable energy management, Shikoku Electric Power Co., Inc. and Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. have initiated their on-site battery storage project. This initiative makes use of stationary storage systems manufactured by Power X, Inc., a common investment body of both corporations. The project officially commenced operations today after extensive installation at the Imabari Shipbuilding Saijo Factory's Higashi-Hiuchi business unit.

This innovative project aims to stabilize electricity supply and demand by optimally controlling the charging and discharging of batteries, particularly in light of the growing integration of variable renewable energy sources. One of the project's key objectives is to maximize the utilization of renewable energy while also reducing electricity bills by suppressing the peak demand at the factory.

The battery system installed consists of two units of Power X's Mega Power 2700A, which has a rated storage capacity of 4.9 MWh and a rated output of 2 MW. This will not only contribute to the overall energy efficiency but also foster a significant reduction in operational costs for Imabari Shipbuilding.

In line with their commitment to sustainability, the companies will continue to collaborate closely to enhance the effectiveness of the battery system. They are focused on establishing concrete expertise related to the on-site battery initiative, which will allow them to extend the insights gained from this project across other locations. This strategic move aims to support a stable power supply while also contributing to the realization of a decarbonized society.

The groundwork for this project began on September 1, 2025, and operations have officially started as of April 1, 2026. The partnership between Shikoku Electric and Imabari Shipbuilding signifies a vital step toward greater energy efficiency and demonstrates a commitment to leveraging technology in the pursuit of innovative solutions for the renewable energy landscape.

Through this collaboration, both corporations are paving the way for similar initiatives in the future, potentially setting a benchmark in the industry. Their ongoing efforts highlight the importance of harnessing renewable energy in a way that meets the demands of modern businesses while also safeguarding the environment for future generations.

The choice of location at Saijo City, Ehime Prefecture, enhances the project’s accessibility and operational efficiency, presenting a remarkable example of industrial cooperation aimed at sustainable development. With this project, Shikoku Electric and Imabari Shipbuilding are not only targeting their operational efficiency but also contributing to broader environmental goals that seek to diminish carbon footprints and promote renewable energy systems across the region.

In joining forces, these two industry leaders are not just improving their organizations but are also inspiring others to look towards innovative and sustainable energy solutions. Their collaboration is a noteworthy model for future endeavours in the energy sector, marking a step forward in the quest for environmentally responsible practices. As they continue this journey, the collective knowledge and experience promise to impact the Japanese energy landscape significantly, setting a precedent for future advancements.
