Collaboration Between Sweden and Indonesia to Advance Tidal Energy Innovations
In an exciting development for sustainable energy, Minesto, a prominent player in ocean energy, has been selected to join the Sweden-Indonesia Sustainability Partnership (SISP). This initiative, backed by the Swedish government, aims to foster sustainable development and strengthen business collaboration in Indonesia, particularly in the realm of tidal energy.
A Strategic Partnership for Sustainable Development
As part of this partnership, Minesto will collaborate closely with Business Sweden to identify and develop opportunities in tidal energy—a sector that holds immense promise in Indonesia. With its unique tidal energy technology, Minesto is set to contribute significantly to the country's sustainability goals, which are increasingly focused on renewable energy sources.
The SISP seeks to unite Swedish companies and Indonesian stakeholders to promote the adoption of sustainable technologies. Within this framework, Minesto will play a vital role in the Sustainable Energy Programme, designed to advance commercial applications for tidal energy technologies. This includes identifying strategic partners, securing financing, and expediting project development, all crucial for enhancing Indonesia’s energy landscape.
Indonesia’s Tidal Energy Potential
Indonesia, recognized as the world's largest archipelagic nation, boasts significant untapped potential for tidal energy generation. The country's myriad islands and straits create ideal conditions for harnessing tidal currents, allowing for an estimated ocean energy potential of approximately 60 gigawatts (GW). However, Indonesia continues to face challenges in transitioning from fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources, as a substantial portion of its electricity generation still relies on traditional energy methods.
Minesto's patented technology offers a solution to unlock this resource. By effectively converting predictable tidal currents into electricity—even in lower flow conditions—Minesto’s innovation can facilitate a more diverse and reliable renewable energy system, complementing existing solar and wind power assets.
Supporting Indonesia's Energy Transition
Johan Lennefalk, the Acting Country Manager for Indonesia at Business Sweden, emphasizes the importance of harnessing Indonesia's ocean and hydropower resources to diversify its renewable energy mix. He states, “Minesto's technology presents a promising opportunity to utilize tidal currents that are often overlooked, thus supplying predictable renewable electricity.” This collaboration is indeed pivotal as Indonesia aims for net-zero emissions by 2060, aligning with global sustainability efforts.
Minesto's ongoing project developments in Indonesia, particularly a tidal energy initiative in Nusa Penida near Bali, highlight the company’s commitment to sustainable practices. Their engagement in feasibility assessments with local partners reinforces the importance of building local capabilities to support project execution.
Dr. Martin Edlund, CEO of Minesto, further asserts that Indonesia represents a considerable market for their technology.
