University of Exeter Celebrates Sharjah's Ruler
The University of Exeter recently honored His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah, by presenting him with its inaugural Honorary President's Medal. This prestigious recognition underscores Sheikh Sultan's significant contributions to higher education, research advancements, and collaborative efforts in academia.
During his visit, Sheikh Sultan, who is also a member of the UAE Supreme Council, laid the foundation stone for a new building at the university, aimed at expanding the Arab and Islamic Studies Institute. This expansion is intended to strengthen the cultural and academic bonds between the UAE and the United Kingdom.
Reflecting on his ties to the University of Exeter, Sheikh Sultan expressed, "This outstanding university welcomed me as a student over forty years ago. It remains a vital part of my intellectual and personal journey." His commitment to fostering educational growth is clearly highlighted through his longstanding relationship with the institution, from which he obtained a PhD in 1985.
A significant highlight of his visit was the inauguration of the 'Compass Leadership Program,' designed to prepare future university leaders from Sharjah for roles in governance, inclusivity, and strategic institutional development. This initiative is part of a series of collaborative projects, which includes a marine sciences program with the University of Khorfakkan, environmental studies in Al Dhaid, and special education projects in partnership with Sharjah Education Academy.
Additionally, Sheikh Sultan inaugurated a special section in the Institute's library dedicated to his impressive body of work, which includes more than 118 publications, and an extensive historical archive pertaining to the Gulf region. He encourages students to apply their acquired knowledge for the benefit of their communities, further enriching their educational experience.
Professor Lisa Roberts, along with students, expressed their heartfelt gratitude for Sheikh Sultan’s visionary support of education and his long-standing commitment to the University of Exeter. She emphasized how their partnership has fostered valuable academic programs and continued to propel research initiatives, thus creating opportunities for students all around the world.
Through these initiatives and honors, the University of Exeter is not just laying the foundations for new buildings but also reinforcing the ties of academic collaboration and cultural exchange between the UAE and the UK. As Sheikh Sultan's contributions continue to shape educational landscapes, the future of academic partnerships looks promising, aiming to inspire and propel the next generation of leaders in higher education and beyond.
