In a groundbreaking development, Nscale has signed a letter of intent with Microsoft to provide a monumental 1.35 gigawatts (GW) of AI computing power at the Monarch AI Campus in West Virginia. This collaboration embodies an ambitious effort to enhance AI infrastructures on a global scale, involving key partnerships with tech giants NVIDIA and Caterpillar.
Collaboration and Infrastructure Development
The partnership will facilitate the deployment of the next-generation NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 GPUs at the Monarch AI Campus. Nscale aims to transform this site into a global flagship for AI computing, ensuring cutting-edge infrastructure capable of supporting vast AI workloads. This initiative is part of Nscale's broader vision to create an advanced AI data center infrastructure, which will be operational in phases beginning late 2027, ultimately establishing one of the world's largest dedicated AI computing facilities.
Josh Payne, CEO of Nscale, emphasized that this collaboration marks a critical milestone for both its operations and the development of the Monarch Campus. By integrating specialized AI infrastructure with Microsoft's global platform, Nscale is laying the groundwork for innovation that could accommodate the most ambitious AI models worldwide.
Nscale’s Acquisition of Key Assets
In conjunction with this collaboration, Nscale announced the acquisition of the American Intelligence Power Corporation (AIPCorp), backed by prominent sponsors, including Fidelis New Energy and 8090 Industries. This acquisition includes the Monarch Compute Campus, a sprawling 900-acre site, which will serve as the first federally certified AI microgrid in the United States. The microgrid, scalable to over 8 GW, positions Nscale at the forefront of AI computing capability in the region.
As global demand for data center capacity skyrockets, projections indicate that by 2030, the need for AI-related computing facilities may reach a staggering 156 GW. The Monarch Compute Campus is poised to meet this need by leveraging Nscale's existing capacity of over 1 GW and expanding its performance capabilities rapidly.
Strategic Infrastructure Plans
The project entails building and operating a high-performance AI data center infrastructure capable of hosting the advanced NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 GPUs and future technologies. This infrastructure will operate under a long-term framework that emphasizes sustainability and efficiency, reflecting its strategic importance. Moreover, the campus is designed to provide high-speed fiber optic connections to major AI hubs, including Ashburn and Chicago, to guarantee low latency and minimal delays for AI workloads.
Microsoft’s president for Business Development and Ventures, Jon Tinter, highlighted their comprehensive approach to building the best global infrastructure by combining owned data centers, leased facilities, and strategic collaborations. Nscale’s partnership, particularly with NVIDIA, is seen as a pivotal aspect in delivering vital AI innovations to clients.
Power Solutions and Community Impact
In a significant move to ensure a stable energy supply, Nscale will implement GE’s G3500 series gas generators through a strategic collaboration with Caterpillar. This initiative aims to achieve two GW of power capacity by the first half of 2028, further supporting the NVIDIA Vera Rubin DSX AI Factory reference design.
Melissa Busen, Senior Vice President of Electric Power at Caterpillar, noted that their collaboration underscores a continued commitment to support extensive power needs for customers by utilizing their robust energy solutions. The G3500 units will offer a reliable, rapidly deployable power solution, crucial for data centers that require swift infrastructure setup.
Nscale remains committed to fostering positive community impacts alongside its strategic development. The company collaborates with local and state authorities to ensure that the project yields long-term benefits for the region. The campus is designed to operate independently of the local grid, alleviating pressure on existing energy consumers while protecting consumer rates.
Furthermore, Nscale is actively pursuing CO2 sequestration methods to mitigate emissions, with significant sequestration capacity available in West Virginia. Even at full capacity, the facility will maintain an efficient design, minimizing water use without affecting local households or water supplies.
