Huawei Advances Urban Transportation with Smarter Rail Systems through Cloud Integration

Huawei's Vision for Smart Urban Rail Systems

The Huawei Smart Urban Rail Summit held in Hong Kong recently shed light on the future of urban transportation. With the theme of “Steaming Ahead with Cloud-Network Convergence and Data AI Enablement for Smart Urban Rail,” the conference brought together industry leaders to discuss the growing importance of integrating cloud services and artificial intelligence into urban rail systems.

During the summit, Thomas Xu, Vice President of Huawei's Intelligent Transportation Division, emphasized the need for selecting the most suitable information, digital, and intelligent technologies tailored to meet the specific demands of urban services. He articulated that advancing urban transportation is intrinsically linked to the convergence of various digital resources.

Dr. Tony Lee Kar-yun, the Director of Operations and Innovation at MTR, highlighted that the integration of digital resources and innovative AI applications can significantly enhance operational efficiency and passenger convenience. He noted that this approach lays the groundwork for a more efficient urban transport system and improves the quality of life for city dwellers.

Furthermore, Xi Xiaodong, Chief Engineer at Shanghai Rail Transit Maintenance Support Co., Ltd., pointed out the necessity for subway operators to integrate external resources and expand internal core capabilities for achieving high-quality development.

Nelson Huang, Director of the Rail Sector under Huawei's Intelligent Transportation Division, shared insights about the company's role in merging innovative ICT tools—such as cloud computing, big data, 5G, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things—to form a digital and intelligent foundation for urban railways. This comprehensive integration is aimed at streamlining operations and enhancing overall service delivery.

Xiong Xinbin, a senior executive from the Beijing Railway Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, also discussed the deployment of advanced models like Pangu to enhance railway capabilities. The application of Ascend and Kunpeng technologies has been pivotal in building strong data foundations and integrating AI to create a comprehensive smart operational platform for transportation.

A follow-up roundtable featured key discussions among experts, including Ji Kun from Huawei, Mohd Yusoff Sulaiman from Malaysian Rail Industry Corporation, and others. They examined technology implementation scenarios, transformation challenges, smart data analytics, and improving user convenience in urban transport.

Huawei's commitment is exemplified by its service to over 300 urban rail lines across more than 70 cities globally. The company is poised to deepen collaborations with industry partners, adhering to principles of openness, cooperation, and mutual success. This determination aims at realizing seamless journeys and logistics alongside the digital and intelligent advancement of urban transportation.

The discussions held at the summit signify an important leap toward the future of urban mobility, showcasing how technology is not just a facilitator but a crucial enabler of more integrated, user-friendly urban rail systems. As cities continue to expand and evolve, the integration of smart technologies promises to transform urban commuting into a more efficient and pleasant experience for everyone involved.
