Contemporary Artist Ryo Teshima's unique perspective through "BABYBOY"
From October 9 to 28, 2025, tagboat in Tokyo will host a compelling exhibition by contemporary artist Ryo Teshima, titled "BABYBOY-NEO(n) BIRTH-". Teshima, a graduate of Tama Art University, has shifted his focus from a successful career as an advertising creative director to establishing himself as a prominent artist since 2019. This exhibition will showcase new works centered around his original character "BABYBOY," designed to reflect societal issues through the lens of innocence.
In a world complicated by pandemics, wars, and natural disasters, Teshima’s artwork presents a colorful and playful style that juxtaposes deep themes of hope and the fragility of life. The character "BABYBOY" serves as a warrior, confronting significant global issues while embodying a unique and complex emotional perspective. This unique combination represents not only a critique of contemporary society but also serves as a medium to connect with broader human emotions.
The exhibition will include a diverse range of works, such as large-scale canvas pieces and the debut of the new "BABYGIRL" series. Each artwork weaves together themes of strife, resilience, and the ongoing conflicts in our world, challenging viewers to reflect on the disparities present in today's society. Through Teshima’s vibrant creations, questions about life, death, and the purpose of existence emerge, creating a new visual experience for attendees.

Concept Behind the Exhibit
The exhibition holds a personal significance for Teshima, as it coincidentally begins on his birthday. "The fragility of life and the meaning of our continued existence are themes I felt compelled to explore through BABYBOY," he explained. Created five years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic, BABYBOY embodies the spirit of resilience, emerging as a unique warrior amidst the global crisis. Teshima’s work takes a hard look at ongoing conflicts and the silent tragedies affecting innocent lives, providing a poignant reminder of the power of existence.
After experiencing a life-changing health crisis himself, Teshima found renewed inspiration through his craft, giving birth to a new creative phase in his life. His intention behind the exhibition is to express, "What if there was a baby warrior who could end all fighting?" A personal and collective journey unfolds through the lens of his art, showcasing the idea that tools for combat can also symbolize the relentless spirit of survival.
