Celebrating International Women's Day with Mimosa: A Floral Tribute to Women’s Freedom and Diversity

On March 7, 2024, Daiichi Engei Co., Ltd., a renowned company in the floral and greenery sector, celebrated International Women’s Day by sponsoring an event titled "All Women Live Freely!" organized by Plan International, an international NGO based in Setagaya, Tokyo. The venue was beautifully decorated with mimosa flowers, symbolizing this special day that advocates for women's rights and gender equality around the world.

Mimosa: The Symbol of International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on March 8, is recognized globally as a day to reflect on and promote women’s rights and gender equality. The mimosa flower, which blooms around this time, is cherished as an emblem of gratitude and solidarity. Daiichi Engei, adhering to its philosophy of connecting people through flowers and greenery, proudly sponsored this event along with Plan International. The event featured a vibrant atmosphere, with mimosa floral arrangements not only adorning the venue but also including floral crowns, corsages, and bouquets provided to attendees, conveying the powerful message of the celebration.

The event included a screening of the documentary "My Taxi Driver" followed by an engaging talk session featuring speakers such as Yukino Nagai, Saki Shibata, and Ms. Ishimaru from Plan International. Over 40 attendees participated, and the talks were streamed live on Instagram, garnering significant interest and feedback from viewers outside the venue. Many attendees expressed how they gained strength from the beauty of the mimosa flowers, enhancing the day's theme of the power and freedom of women.

Why is Mimosa Associated with International Women’s Day?
Often referred to as "Mimosa Day," International Women’s Day has its roots in Italy, where men historically gifted mimosa flowers to women as a symbol of appreciation and respect. The striking golden blooms of the mimosa, which reach their peak around early March, have become a globally recognized symbol of dignity and unity for women,

Comments from the Floral Decoration Team
As the team responsible for decorating the venue with these beautiful flowers, there were initial concerns about whether we could acquire them in good condition earlier this year. However, thanks to close collaboration with our suppliers, we successfully sourced stunning mimosa flowers for the event. Flower and greenery possess the unique ability to communicate sentiments beyond language, directly appealing to the human senses. While directly supporting women and girls through flowers may be challenging, we aimed to convey the essence of Plan International's message through the beauty of flowers, hoping to touch the hearts of those who attended.

Ongoing Collaboration with Plan International
In addition to its support for International Women’s Day, Daiichi Engei is committed to collaborating with Plan International for Mother’s Day as well. For the 2026 Mother’s Day initiative, the theme "Fleur Message (A Message Through Flowers)" will drive a special campaign—"Flowers for Mothers, Hope for the World." For each selected product sold through Daiichi Engei’s online shop, 100 yen will be donated to Plan International's "Gift of Hope" initiative, which supports women and children around the globe. This gesture aims to transform the gratitude expressed on Mother’s Day into a message of solidarity and hope for children and women's futures worldwide.
