Grady Health System's Vision for the Future
Grady Health System has taken a bold step forward by unveiling plans for a new medical campus in South Fulton County, which promises to enhance care delivery for one of the fastest-growing communities in metro Atlanta. The initiative is not just about building new facilities; it is a comprehensive strategy to improve access to high-quality healthcare, alleviate existing capacity challenges, and empower local communities to thrive.
Expanding Access to Quality Care
The newly proposed campus will consist of a modern medical office building and a state-of-the-art acute care hospital. These facilities will be situated near a freestanding emergency department currently under construction on Campbellton Fairburn Road in Union City. The phased approach to development begins with the medical office, slated to open in early 2028, followed by the hospital, expected to be operational by 2031. Grady’s CEO, John Haupert, noted, "At Grady, world-class care extends far beyond our hospital walls."
Despite a robust patient roster, with over 2,000 patients relying on Grady for daily care and approximately 155,000 emergency department visits each year, the health system faces persistent capacity issues. To address these challenges, Grady has broadened its services through neighborhood clinics, mobile health units, and telehealth options, allowing patients to receive care in more accessible locations. However, ongoing changes to federal funding and healthcare policies continue to affect hospital operations.
Comprehensive Facilities for Community Needs
The South Fulton medical campus is poised to play a critical role in fulfilling both current and future health demands. The medical office will provide essential services such as imaging, specialty clinics, a surgery center, and rehabilitation facilities. Additionally, a full floor dedicated to pediatric care will be offered in partnership with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, ensuring the youngest members of the community receive specialized attention.
The heart of the campus will be a 200-bed acute care hospital featuring critical care services and emergency treatment capabilities. Grady plans to establish this hospital as a Level 3 verified trauma center, equipped to manage severe injuries and stabilizing patients before their transfer to higher-level trauma facilities.
As part of this grand investment, the anticipated costs will exceed $1 billion, financed through a combination of Fulton County bond funding and philanthropic contributions raised through a multi-year capital campaign. Fulton County's Commission Chairman, Robb Pitts, reaffirmed the importance of this development, stating, "For the people of South Fulton, improved access to health care is not a luxury; it is a necessity."
Leadership Transition and Future Directions
In parallel to the campus announcement, Grady Health System revealed a leadership transition that aligns with its broader strategies for growth and elevated service levels. After 15 years at the helm, John Haupert has announced plans to retire at the end of 2026. Effective immediately, Anthony Saul, who has been with Grady for over seven years, has stepped into the position of President and Chief Operating Officer.
Haupert's tenure has seen significant developments at Grady, marking it as a cornerstone of Atlanta's healthcare system. In his upcoming advisory role, he will guide Grady through critical phases of the campus project and foster essential fundraising efforts.
Anthony Saul, Grady’s new leader, is equipped with over 25 years of healthcare leadership experience. His appointment comes during a transformative time as Grady aims to meet the needs of its growing and diverse patient population while navigating complex reimbursement landscapes. "Anthony is the right leader at the right time," remarked Larry Gellerstedt, Chair of Grady’s Board of Directors.
As Grady prioritizes its future with the South Fulton Medical Campus, the health system is also emphasizing the enhancement of its neighborhood health center and urgent care services to further improve healthcare access and quality. This combined effort represents Grady’s commitment to ensuring that all residents in South Fulton not only have access to healthcare services but also the support to thrive in their communities.
