Leica Gallery Boston is thrilled to unveil 'Homeland,' an evocative solo exhibition by Moldovan photographer Maria Guțu, who has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award (LOBA). The exhibition will open on November 7, 2025, and will be open to the public until January 4, 2026.
A Journey Through Memory and Belonging
In 'Homeland' (2019–2023), Guțu takes the viewer on a poignant journey reflecting her childhood in a rural village in Moldova. Through her lens, she captures the people and landscapes that played a significant role in shaping her formative years. Balancing a sense of nostalgia with social realism, Guțu's work reveals both the captivating beauty and the subtle struggles of her community.
The exhibition features striking images of children wandering fields, traditional musicians, and serene yet empty rural landscapes. These images evoke a deep sense of longing, raising questions about what remains when many have departed in search of better opportunities elsewhere. Guțu’s art highlights the complexity of her homeland—beautiful yet full of contradictions.

Opening Reception and Exhibition Hours

The gallery is open for visitors from Monday to Saturday, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM, and on Sunday, from 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Located at 74 Arlington St, Boston, MA 02116, the Leica Gallery invites all to experience the rich visual narrative that 'Homeland' has to offer.
About Maria Guțu
Born in 1996 in the Republic of Moldova, Maria Guțu is a documentary photographer whose work delves into themes of youth, isolation, and the intricate relationships between individuals and their environments. She holds a degree in cinematography from the Academy of Music, Theatre, and Fine Arts in Chișinău and furthered her studies at the Docdocdoc School of Modern Photography in Saint Petersburg. Guțu's work has gained international acclaim, including recognition in Artpil's '30 Under 30 Women Photographers', as well as accolades from the Sony World Photography Awards and The Independent Photographer. With a bright future ahead, she currently resides and works in Glodeni, Moldova.
