Vale Base Metals Completes Transition of Voisey's Bay to Underground Mining Operations
Vale Base Metals Completes Voisey's Bay Transition to Underground Mining
Vale Base Metals has reached a significant milestone with the completion of its ambitious $2.94 billion expansion project at the Voisey's Bay mine, located in Northern Labrador. This major development shifts the operation from an open-pit mine to an underground facility, promising to increase nickel production to 45,000 tonnes per year (45 ktpa). Nickel is a critical mineral essential for energy security, economic independence, and the ongoing energy transition.
The expansion includes the establishment of two underground mines, Reid Brook and Eastern Deeps, which will produce concentrates to be processed at the Long Harbour processing plant. This facility is renowned for being one of the least polluting nickel processing plants globally. In addition to boosting nickel output, the expansion will also yield 20 ktpa of copper and 2.6 ktpa of cobalt, vital for various industrial applications including the production of electric vehicles and clean energy infrastructure.
The full commissioning of the expansion is anticipated in the second half of 2026, with the newly mined essential minerals being shipped globally. Voisey's Bay is recognized as a significant supplier of nickel to the U.S. market, a space that is increasingly important given the demand for low-carbon materials in modern industries.
Shaun Usmar, the CEO of Vale Base Metals, remarked on the successful completion of the project, emphasizing the company’s commitment to maximizing the value of its assets while supplying responsibly produced nickel to global markets. Usmar also highlighted the importance of ensuring that local economic benefits are derived from the Voisey's Bay operations. This involves collaborative efforts with indigenous partners, notably the Innu Nation and the government of Nunatsiavut, on whose traditional lands the mine operates.
As a result of the expansion, employment opportunities at Voisey's Bay have significantly increased. The direct workforce has grown to approximately 1,100 employees from around 600 prior to the expansion. At the project's peak, the workforce numbered 3,400, encompassing both direct and indirect positions in the region, underlining the project's role as a catalyst for local economic growth.
Vale Base Metals showcases its dedication to fostering social and economic development, which encompasses local hiring practices, procurement strategies, capacity building, and nurturing indigenous partnerships. The positive impact of these initiatives highlights the company's mission to generate shared benefits for its stakeholders.
Voisey's Bay first commenced production in 2005 and this recent expansion ensures its ongoing relevance as a key economic driver in Newfoundland and Labrador. Moreover, it is poised to provide high-purity, low-carbon nickel for many years to come, aligning with global sustainability goals and the transition towards greener technologies.
In conclusion, Vale Base Metals stands at the forefront of the energy transition by being one of the largest producers of high-quality nickel, as well as significant sources of responsible copper and cobalt. With operations headquartered in Toronto and activities spanning various regions, including Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario, Brazil, and Indonesia, the company continues to play a vital role in providing the essential materials needed for a cleaner, greener future.
